Role Overview:
The Outdoor Athletic Facilities Manager is responsible for evaluating, planning, and coordinating the upkeep and turf management of all outdoor athletic facilities, including the aquatic center. This role initiates a continuous maintenance and renovation strategy, administers maintenance operations, and assesses the effectiveness of all outdoor athletic venues. Ensures that all facilities are prepared and maintained for practices, competitions, and events, while also overseeing the cleanliness and readiness of venues for subsequent use. Additionally, this position manages the daily chemical maintenance of the aquatic center and supervises the maintenance crew's equipment service and repairs.
Key Responsibilities:
The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Maintaining athletic fields and competitive areas in peak condition for practices and events; coordinating pre-event preparations and post-use clean-up of facilities.
- Collaborating with maintenance staff to mark and paint fields according to NCAA regulations; managing the setup and takedown of facilities for events, including field equipment and other necessary components.
- Overseeing the scheduling of athletic facilities for intercollegiate practices and contests, as well as managing contract agreements and rentals for community groups.
- Working alongside the Director of Athletics to facilitate scheduling requests for athletic facilities; assisting Event Services staff and ensuring effective communication between scheduling groups and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
- Managing the landscaping maintenance around athletic facilities, including tasks such as trimming, planting, and weeding.
- Monitoring and inspecting all areas for maintenance and safety issues; assisting with construction projects as assigned.
- Providing dirt management for baseball and softball fields, including regular maintenance of infield conditions.
- Leading the athletic facilities maintenance crew, including supervising, planning, and assigning work; making hiring and disciplinary decisions; providing performance feedback and approving timesheets.
- Adhering to all safety and housekeeping policies and procedures.
- Contributing to team efforts by completing related duties as necessary.
- Performing other related duties and special projects as assigned.

Experience/Training/Education:
Required
- A high school diploma or equivalent, supplemented with two (2) years of additional coursework or training in turf management, irrigation systems, and pesticide application.
- Five (5) years of relevant experience in a similar role, including at least one (1) year in a supervisory position.
- Preference will be given to candidates with commercial pool maintenance experience.
- A valid California Class C driver's license with a good driving record is required.
- Understanding of commercial lawn and landscaping maintenance techniques, methods, materials, and equipment.
- Familiarity with safety regulations and procedures for ground maintenance.
- Ability to operate and maintain lawn and landscape maintenance equipment safely.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Ability to recommend appropriate actions within established guidelines.
- Ability to build strong relationships and align resources to achieve objectives.
- Ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.
- Competence in interacting with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
This position primarily involves heavy work in an outdoor environment, with frequent exposure to inclement weather. Flexibility to work evenings and weekends is required, along with the ability to travel as necessary.
Physical Demands:
Incumbents regularly stand and walk for extended periods; may travel to various locations for meetings and work; utilize hands and fingers to operate tools and machinery; balance, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb stairs; frequently lift, carry, and move objects weighing up to 10-25 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds; exposure to dust, noise, temperature extremes, and odors; ability to communicate clearly and distinctly; visual acuity for reading fine print and operating a computer; auditory ability to understand conversations in person and over the phone.
