Overview:

The Laboratory Operations Manager is accountable for overseeing various laboratory divisions (such as histology, microbiology, and phlebotomy). This role involves setting objectives, organizing schedules, and managing laboratory operations, which includes procurement and upkeep of laboratory instruments and materials. The manager ensures that all laboratory functions align with organizational objectives and adhere to relevant regulations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead all departmental and staff service initiatives to enhance customer satisfaction.
  • Play a crucial role in fostering and sustaining employee morale and retention, while minimizing turnover rates.
  • Oversee personnel management, including the supervision of all departmental staff.
  • Engage in decision-making processes related to hiring, disciplinary actions, and termination of staff.
  • Manage associate evaluations, ensuring accurate time and attendance records; assist with staffing, scheduling, and leave requests; oversee educational compliance with best practices; and maintain effective communication with associates.
  • Collaborate with Administration and Finance to develop annual capital and operational budgets.
  • Maintain departmental expenses and revenue within the approved fiscal budget.
  • Review rates and procedure codes, and supervise the billing and processing of laboratory tests.
  • Ensure continuous performance improvement and quality management by monitoring quality control programs, including proficiency testing and addressing deficiencies.
  • Manage laboratory operations in conjunction with the Laboratory Medical Director and System Director of Laboratory Services.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant accrediting bodies such as CAP, AABB, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA.
  • Maintain accurate statistics manually or within the Laboratory Information System (LIS) to track productivity, performance metrics, and quality management.
  • Ensure all laboratory equipment is operational and that personnel are trained in proper usage; verify completion of major equipment repairs and initiate service contracts as needed.
  • Develop and implement operational policies and procedures for all departments under management.
  • Provide technical guidance for problem-solving across all related departments.
  • Perform waived, moderate, and high complexity testing as required for all relevant departments.
  • Represent the laboratory on designated hospital committees as necessary, such as Infection Control, Blood Utilization Committee, Quality Management, and Safety Committee.
Qualifications:

A. Education/Skills

• A Bachelor's Degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent laboratory training and experience as defined by CLIA regulations is required.

B. Experience
  • At least 3-5 years of clinical laboratory experience in moderate/high complexity testing for the specific area of responsibility is preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience is required.
C. Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications
  • Certification for MLS, MLT, or MT from ASCP, AMT, AAB, or HEW/HHS is mandatory.
  • If holding a certification with an expiration date, it must be maintained and kept current.
