Billings Flying Service (BFS) is a premier provider in the aviation sector, focusing on CH-47 aerial firefighting and heavy lift operations. Our fleet includes seven CH-47Ds, one UH-60A, and two Bell 206Ls, all equipped to combat wildfires using bucket or tank methods.

About the Position

The Pilot-In-Command is accountable to the Chief Pilot and plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe and effective execution of flight missions while upholding exceptional customer service standards. This role necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the CFRs relevant to Part 91, Part 133, Part 135, Part 137, along with the company's Operations Specifications and manuals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assume responsibility as per CFR 91.3, ensuring the pilot in command is the final authority regarding aircraft operations, including weather-related decisions. In emergencies, the pilot may deviate from regulations as necessary.
  • Review flight assignments and gather briefing information concerning the flight's purpose, weather conditions, operational procedures, and any specific instructions.
  • Prepare or oversee the creation of flight plans, taking into account factors such as altitude, terrain, weather, range, weight, cruise performance, airport facilities, and navigational aids.
  • Ensure the aircraft is preflight inspected, loaded, equipped, and staffed appropriately for the flight.
  • Verify that cargo is secured and that provisions for passenger comfort and emergency equipment are onboard.
  • Confirm compliance with duty and flight time limitations, ensuring personnel are properly certified, rested, and attired.
  • Ensure all necessary forms, equipment, and materials are present on the aircraft prior to departure.
  • Document mechanical issues and ensure maintenance personnel are notified of any discrepancies.
  • Before each flight, verify that all recorded items have been addressed in accordance with the approved Minimum Equipment List.
  • Ensure all passengers are briefed on safety procedures before taxiing and that emergency evacuation protocols are understood.
  • File a flight plan when required.
  • Delegate tasks to other crew members while retaining overall responsibility.
Qualifications
  • Extensive knowledge of FAA regulations, Operations Specifications, Flight Manuals, and Operations Manual is essential.
  • Must be qualified to serve as Pilot-in-Command in the CH-47D.
  • No FAA violations or warnings in the past five years.
  • Ability to follow instructions and maintain focus is crucial.
  • Strong written, verbal, communication, and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Capability to manage multiple priorities effectively and follow through on assigned tasks.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Must meet applicable USFS hour requirements.
  • High School diploma or equivalent is necessary.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • 1500 hours PIC (Helicopter) experience.
    • Proficiency in vertical reference and/or tank operations.
    • Must meet or exceed USFS Pilot In Command hour and certification requirements.
    • A four-year college degree is advantageous.
    • Technical knowledge of the CH-47D product line is preferred.
Supervisory Duties
  • Oversee field crew and copilots.
