The Advanced Academic Services (AAS) Instructional Consultant for Secondary Education will play a pivotal role in facilitating the execution of gifted education services and the Young Scholars initiative. This position collaborates closely with the Director of Advanced Academic Services to oversee the management of AAS programs, which include the screening, referral, identification, and placement of students in gifted services or Young Scholars programs. The consultant will provide consistent, school-based instructional support and professional development to ensure that the curriculum delivered aligns with the written curriculum at the secondary level.

This role involves collaboration with central office instructional staff, school personnel, parents, and various community resources to enhance student outcomes and meet the district's objectives as outlined in the ACPS Strategic Plan and the Local Plan for the Gifted.

Qualifications

Education: A Bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s degree is preferred.

Certificates & Licenses: A valid postgraduate professional teaching license from the Virginia Department of Education in secondary education is required, or the ability to obtain one, with an endorsement in gifted education or the ability to secure one.

Experience: A minimum of five years of experience in secondary education, with a focus on gifted education.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with the Director of Advanced Academic Services to manage special AAS programs for the identification and placement of gifted students, ensuring equitable practices and policies.
  • Implements effective procedures to identify gifted and advanced learners, including Young Scholars and Governor's School candidates.
  • Maintains open lines of communication with stakeholders through the AAS website, newsletters, and district-wide communication channels.
  • Promotes understanding and awareness of AAS services, including Young Scholars, Dual-Enrollment, Advanced Placement, and Honors programs, while addressing systemic inequities in these academic areas.
  • Responds to inquiries from various stakeholders (e.g., educators, parents, administrators) to resolve issues and provide guidance.
  • Delivers regular, school-based instructional support and professional development to ensure alignment of gifted resources and instructional strategies with the written curriculum.
  • Collaborates with instructional staff, school personnel, parents, and community resources to enhance student outcomes and achieve district-wide goals in alignment with the ACPS Strategic Plan, including sharing current developments and best practices in equity and diversity within gifted education.
  • Assists educators in enhancing instructional delivery and performance, supporting Honors, Dual-Enrollment, and AP teachers in implementing established curricula and individualized student plans.
  • Assists the Director of Gifted and Advanced Academics Services with data analysis related to AAS student enrollment and distribution, ensuring adherence to ACPS policies regarding equity and representation.
  • Participates in various meetings to convey and gather information necessary for effective job performance.
  • May undertake additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
