What does this role entail?
The State of Montana employs a diverse workforce across various agencies, all under the Montana State Fund for workers' compensation insurance. Each agency operates with autonomy in managing their claims and cultivating their own safety culture. Within the Health Care and Benefits Division of the Department of Administration, we have dedicated positions focused on assisting agencies in effectively managing injury claims, applying best practices for return-to-work, and implementing proven safety management strategies.

We are in search of a professional who excels in building collaborative relationships with State agencies. This role involves implementing and facilitating comprehensive safety, occupational health, and workers' compensation programs to maintain a safe and healthy work environment for all State employees. The successful candidate will oversee program compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, provide guidance to agency safety personnel, develop enterprise-level safety training initiatives, and recommend improvements to work processes.

Qualifications and Experience Required:
A Bachelor's degree in safety management, safety engineering, industrial hygiene, occupational safety and health, or a related discipline is essential. The ideal candidate will possess three to five years of experience in the occupational safety and health sector, with a focus on employee training, hazard identification, risk management, and program oversight. Alternative combinations of education and experience will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

  • Expertise in risk management and loss control related to employee safety programs.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and their application across various occupations.
  • Familiarity with the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), job safety analysis, and return-to-work strategies.
  • Proficiency in training methodologies and techniques.
  • Understanding of hazardous operations, recordkeeping standards, and control measures including personal protective equipment.
  • Skills in workplace risk management, ergonomic assessments, and accommodation strategies.
  • Knowledge of workers' compensation policies and procedures.
  • Ability to translate technical knowledge into practical solutions.
  • Experience in interacting with employees and management in various situations.
  • Commitment to confidentiality regarding sensitive personnel information.
  • Adaptability to changing work environments and the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Collaboration with agency safety staff to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Proficiency in interpreting and advising on OSHA regulations and safety practices.
