Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced and innovative Assistant Director to lead the Bibliographic Description Unit at Yale University Library. The successful candidate will provide strategic direction and vision for the unit, overseeing the cataloging and metadata activities for special collections materials.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the Bibliographic Description Unit, providing strategic direction and vision for the team.
  • Oversee the cataloging and metadata activities for special collections materials, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for the unit, ensuring compliance with library standards and best practices.
  • Collaborate with other library departments and units to ensure seamless integration of services and resources.
  • Provide training and guidance to staff, promoting professional development and growth.
  • Stay up-to-date with emerging trends and technologies in cataloging and metadata, applying this knowledge to improve unit operations and services.
Requirements
  • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent.
  • At least 5 years of professional experience in cataloging and metadata, preferably in a research library setting.
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with experience in supervising and training staff.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of bibliographic standards and metadata, including AACR2, RDA, DCRM, and MARC.
  • Experience with integrated library systems and electronic resource management.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience cataloging rare or special collections materials.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of American or European history or literature.
  • Strong bibliographic knowledge of ancient or modern European languages.
  • Familiarity with linked data concepts and/or applications.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of search and discovery, user experience, and/or assessment for special collections.
