Position Overview:


The Senior Reliability Engineer will play a crucial role in evaluating equipment life cycles and conducting analyses to guide investment and maintenance strategies for our assets.

This expert will leverage their knowledge to identify potential challenges and mitigate production failures or malfunctions.

Additionally, this role will focus on improving process efficiency and ensuring our production systems can scale to meet our ambitious growth objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Formulate hypotheses and models (e.g., acceleration models) and validate them through experimental methods.
  • Design and oversee experiments aimed at qualifying enhancements for thin film solar cell performance, reliability, and stability, while also aiming to reduce manufacturing costs.
  • Conduct root-cause failure analysis and component degradation assessments using techniques such as SEM/EDX, XRD, EL/PL, and other diagnostic tools. Present findings in an organized manner.
  • Lead collaborations with certification and external laboratories (such as PACT, NREL, Sandia, and academic partners) to secure necessary certifications for IEC or UL standards.
  • Develop methodologies and train technical staff on building and testing devices for reliability.

This includes:

  • Constructing small solar modules: encapsulation/lamination, framing, stringing/tabbing, and connectorizing for reliability and durability assessments.
  • Instrumenting and subjecting samples to accelerated chamber testing of solar mini-modules and modules, including damp heat, thermal cycling, humidity freeze, light exposure, and elevated temperature, along with other in-house developed stress-test methodologies.
  • Characterizing solar modules using electroluminescence (EL) or photoluminescence (PL) imaging, light I-V testing, IR imaging, and other diagnostic techniques.
  • Support the R&D Lab in developing new methodologies and equipment.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree with 1 year of experience or M.S. degree with 4 years of experience; or a B.S. degree with 8 years of experience in engineering, materials, chemistry, or a closely related field.
  • Proven experience in laboratory testing and reliability/durability assessments of electronic devices, with a strong emphasis on solar photovoltaic cells/modules reliability testing and failure analysis methods.
  • Familiarity with probability, statistics, and design of experiments (e.g., factorial DOE); experience with statistical analysis software such as JMP, Minitab, R, or similar for hypothesis testing and predictive modeling.
  • Programming proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or similar is highly desirable.
  • Strong practical laboratory skills, capable of designing custom mechanical and electronic testing apparatus.
  • Extensive experience with failure analysis techniques.
  • Ability to navigate high levels of ambiguity and a vision for future technological trends.
  • High degree of personal initiative when provided with management guidance and direction.
  • Ability to work independently within a highly matrixed environment and possess excellent listening, written, and verbal communication skills.

Salary Range:
$120,000 – $160,000
