Position Overview

Under the guidance of the Medical Director, the Medical Practitioner will deliver effective and economical healthcare services to student-patients. This role requires a licensed and proficient healthcare provider who will offer a comprehensive range of primary healthcare services within a student health facility, including the evaluation and treatment of acute, episodic, and chronic health conditions, alongside preventive and wellness services.

The Medical Practitioner will collaborate with a Lead Physician and a team of healthcare professionals, including nurse practitioners, registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, medical assistants, and clinical assistants. The role involves utilizing various ancillary services such as radiology, laboratory, pharmacy, and specialized clinics for dental, eye, and orthopedic care. Additionally, the practitioner may provide consultations for student-athletes referred by athletic medicine professionals.

This position is a full-time, permanent role with eligibility for benefits. It is classified as exempt under FLSA regulations and does not qualify for overtime pay. Standard working hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., subject to change based on operational requirements.

Department Overview

The Student Health Services department is dedicated to providing primary medical care and health promotion to the student body through a variety of programs and services. Care is delivered by board-certified physicians, certified nurse practitioners, and a range of medical staff, including nurses and pharmacists. In addition to basic medical services, the department offers health education, orthopedic care, and mental health services.

The mission of the Student Health Services is to ensure high-quality, accessible, and student-centered medical care in a supportive environment, partnering with students to promote their health and well-being in alignment with their academic success.

Qualifications

Applicants must possess a medical degree and have completed a residency in a primary care specialty such as family medicine, internal medicine, gynecology, pediatrics, or emergency medicine accredited by the appropriate medical education council.

Essential Skills

  • Proficient in managing mental health issues and capable of providing ongoing care for mild to moderate anxiety and depression.
  • Knowledgeable in health promotion and capable of referring students to community resources when necessary.
  • Competent in using computer systems for documentation and communication.
  • Experienced in interpreting diagnostic imaging and test results.
  • Adaptable to changing work conditions while maintaining positive interactions with colleagues and students.
  • Ability to perform administrative tasks, including patient intake and eligibility verification.
  • At least one year of post-residency experience in a primary care setting, preferably within a college health environment.
  • Experience in managing student-patients with concussions and performing minor surgical procedures.
  • Knowledge in reproductive health and experience in prescribing appropriate therapies.

Licenses/Certifications Required

Must hold and maintain:

  • A valid medical license to practice in the state.
  • Board certification relevant to the medical specialty.
  • A valid registration for prescribing controlled substances.
  • Current CPR and AED certification.
