Minimum Qualifications
Senior Power Systems Engineer Education and/or Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in engineering, coupled with seven (7) years of relevant engineering experience.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Texas; or if licensed in another state, the capability to secure a Texas PE license within one (1) year of employment.
Principal Engineer - Power Systems Education and/or Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in engineering or a related field, along with eight (8) years of engineering experience, which may include time before and/or after obtaining a professional engineer license.
Licenses or Certifications:
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Texas; or if licensed in another state, the capability to secure a Texas PE license within one (1) year of employment.

The Principal Engineer / Senior Power Systems Engineer will assist the Distribution Reliability team by providing technical expertise for the overhead and underground distribution systems, networks, and related advanced grid program initiatives.

This role requires the ability to perform tasks with minimal assistance from colleagues, product documentation, and support resources across various projects.

Senior Power Systems Engineer: $62.07
Principal Engineer - Power Systems: $67.04

Work Schedule:
  • This position is categorized as Essential Personnel with the City of Austin. Essential staff are required to work during emergencies or adverse weather conditions if scheduled and, in some cases, when not scheduled. Essential employees ensure the continuity of key operations for the City of Austin.
  • Work hours may include after hours, holidays, and weekends.
  • Shifts may change according to departmental needs.
  • Employees may be required to work additional hours outside of the regular work schedule.
Fair Labor Standards Act:

This position is considered FLSA Exempt. Exempt employees are salaried and, except as provided, are not eligible for overtime compensation.

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Experience:
  • Experience conducting power system studies such as protective coordination, fault studies, load flows, service reliability, power quality, and voltage stability.
  • Familiarity with data and technology tools such as Maximo, PowerBI, Milsoft Engineering Analysis, CYME, GIS (Geographic Information System), ADMS, or OMS software.
  • Experience in reviewing or interpreting circuit maps, electrical schematics, control diagrams, and charts for electrical facilities.
  • Utilizes outage data, reliability metrics, and circuit loading to formulate system reliability work plans.
  • Provides technical support to address customer distribution issues.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability to manage multiple daily interactions with internal and external customers.
  • Experience overseeing utility projects from design through field installation.
  • Experience with tracking incidents, investigations, audits, and their associated action items.
  • Experience coordinating work with vendors and internally across various work groups.
  • Experience working with large data sets and data visualization tools.
