Law Enforcement Officer

This is a term role within the Dignitary Protection Unit of the Supreme Court of the United States, available to all eligible FERS and CSRS retirees who qualify for reemployment as a federal annuitant and law enforcement officer. A dual compensation offset waiver will be provided, allowing reemployed annuitants to receive their full salary alongside their full annuity without any penalties.
Salary Range
$81,552 - Minimum starting salary
$139,419 - Maximum base salary

The Supreme Court of the United States Police operates as a Federal law enforcement entity, authorized under United States Code 40 U.S.C. The Supreme Court Police enforce federal and District of Columbia laws and regulations, along with rules governing the Supreme Court Building and grounds as prescribed by the Marshal and approved by the Chief Justice of the United States. The mission of the department is to uphold the integrity of the Constitutional Mission of the Supreme Court by safeguarding the Supreme Court, its Justices, employees, guests, and visitors.
The Supreme Court Police are tasked with delivering a comprehensive range of police services, including:
- Protection of the Supreme Court Building and grounds, along with individuals and property therein;
- Dignitary Protection for the Supreme Court Justices, both domestically and internationally;
- Maintaining order and decorum within the Supreme Court Building and grounds, including managing demonstrations and large-scale events;
- Providing security within Courtrooms;
- Preparing various reports, including incident, found property, accident, and arrest reports, as well as testifying in court.
- Utilizing expert knowledge of protective operations, countermeasures, protective intelligence, and general law enforcement duties to ensure the safety of protectees of the Supreme Court;
- Providing security within Courtrooms;
- Coordinating with internal and external stakeholders to develop operational plans;
- Traveling domestically and internationally as required;
- Conducting threat research and assessment support;
- Performing additional duties as assigned in support of the Dignitary Protection Unit and police operations, as primary duties allow.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen, National, or someone who owes allegiance to the United States.
- If a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, certification of registration with the Selective Service System is required, or proof of exemption.
- Must meet experience requirements as outlined in the qualifications.
- Applicants must possess a valid driver's license with an excellent driving record for at least one year at the time of application.
- Proficiency in firearm use is mandatory. Applicants with a misdemeanor conviction for domestic violence are ineligible.
- Visible body markings (including tattoos, body art, facial piercings, gauges, and brandings) on the head or neck (above the collar), hands, and fingers are prohibited.
- Hair regulations apply to both male and female officers regarding length and color.
- Successful completion of a medical examination, including rigorous fitness standards, is required.
- Completion of a psychological evaluation and a comprehensive background investigation is mandatory.
To be eligible to apply as a reemployed annuitant, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Currently a FERS or CSRS retiree eligible for reemployment as a federal annuitant and a federal law enforcement officer;
- Successful completion of the Uniformed Police Training Program (UPTP) or the Criminal Investigator Training Program (CITP);
- A minimum of five (5) years of experience in dignitary protection;
- Strong oral and written communication skills, along with excellent interpersonal abilities;
- Demonstrated high ethical standards and trustworthiness in all work situations;
- No record of felony convictions or pending criminal charges;
- U.S. citizenship and age requirements apply.
A high school diploma is the minimum educational requirement for applicants meeting the other eligibility criteria.
