Brooklyn Community Services (BCS) has been dedicated to empowering individuals and families since 1866. Our mission is to help children and families realize their potential, strengthen family units, and promote self-sufficiency among adults. We operate over 40 programs, serving more than 20,000 individuals annually.

The Supportive Housing Program is designed to assist young adults aged 18-25 who are experiencing serious mental health challenges and have a history of homelessness. This program is committed to providing a safe and supportive environment, particularly for members of the LGBTQ+ community, and aims to guide participants towards long-term stability.

Position Summary:

The Benefits Access Specialist will work under the supervision of the Assistant Program Director to assess tenant eligibility for various financial assistance programs that can address their personal and healthcare needs. This includes navigating government benefits such as Medicaid, energy assistance programs, and other community resources. The Specialist will collaborate with staff to facilitate the application process for eligible clients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver high-quality service in alignment with funder and regulatory standards, BCS policies, and ethical guidelines.
  • Manage and maintain data within the agency's electronic health record system and relevant city databases.
  • Assist clients in securing and retaining government benefits and services for which they may qualify.
  • Guide clients through the application process, including reminders for recertification and utilizing available technology.
  • Conduct follow-ups to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Help clients gather necessary documentation for applications.
  • Provide individual counseling on benefits-related matters and other concerns.
  • Prepare and submit regular reports to the Assistant Director.
  • Coordinate with external service providers for outreach and educational presentations.
  • Participate in required training sessions.
  • Support advocacy initiatives within the Supportive Housing Program, staying informed about available wrap-around services.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community organizations to enhance service delivery.
  • Facilitate collaboration between various stakeholders within the program.
  • Offer support services to clients in their residences or at the agency's office.
  • Assist in resolving tenant disputes and issues.
  • Perform additional tasks as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Associate degree or relevant experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with government assistance programs.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Adept at troubleshooting complex issues related to benefit applications.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality.
  • Proficient in computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Availability to work evenings as required.
  • Bilingual abilities in Spanish are advantageous.
  • Previous experience in social services or non-profit settings is a plus.
  • Genuine interest in serving underserved communities.
  • Familiarity with electronic data management systems.
