Overview:

The Medical Laboratory Technician I is responsible for conducting clinical analyses in designated areas such as general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology. This role encompasses all necessary tasks to ensure precise and prompt results, including quality assurance, performance enhancement, proficiency evaluations, and routine maintenance of laboratory instruments. The technician identifies abnormal critical values and adheres to established protocols for communicating results to the healthcare team. Additionally, clerical, general, and phlebotomy tasks are performed to support daily laboratory operations, including the provision of blood products as required by medical personnel.

Key Responsibilities:

• Ensures that the organization’s philosophy and core values are reflected in the services provided to clients.

• Specimen Collection and Management – Collects blood samples through venipuncture and/or fingerstick, ensuring accurate identification and labeling; operates the pneumatic tube system; adheres to protocols for processing and testing specimens, including the use of various centrifuges; collects other specified patient specimens as outlined in procedural manuals.

• Result Management – Identifies discrepancies or unusual results and takes necessary actions; communicates critical values in accordance with policies; performs tests within designated timeframes; conducts laboratory analyses in areas such as Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, and Microbiology; executes blood bank procedures, including crossmatching and dispensing blood products; operates laboratory automated analyzers per established guidelines.

• Quality Control – Executes, evaluates, and documents quality control measures in compliance with policies and procedures, following CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO standards; tracks and reports performance improvement metrics.

• Maintenance and Troubleshooting – Conducts routine and periodic preventative maintenance with proper documentation; addresses minor issues and initiates service requests as necessary; manages inventory of supplies/reagents; reviews and updates policy and procedure manuals; ensures reagents are dated and disposes of expired items.

• Professional Development – Takes initiative for personal and professional growth through continued education.

• Training – Assists in the onboarding and training of new staff and students in laboratory practices.

• Compliance – Adheres to CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA regulations.

• Safety Protocols – Follows established safety, infection control, security, compliance, and hazardous materials protocols.

• Laboratory Information Systems – Utilizes LIS and HIS systems effectively to perform, charge, and report laboratory results.

• Competency Assessment – Successfully completes annual competency evaluations by the assigned deadline.

Qualifications:

Education/Skills

  • Associate's degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting the requirements defined in the CLIA regulation 42CFR:
    • A) Completion of an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration and currently holding the military enlisted occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist (laboratory technician);OR
    • B) 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution that includes at least 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses including six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination;AND
    • C) Laboratory training including completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, NAACLS, or other organization approved by HHS (this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above), or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.

Experience

  • No experience required for graduates of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by NAACLS or other organizations approved by HHSOR
  • Six months of approved clinical laboratory experience, which must include a clinical rotation through the following sections of the laboratory: Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids in the U.S. or with an accredited laboratory within the last five years. (This meets the AMT MLT eligibility requirement)

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications

  • State Licensure is required in Louisiana.
  • New graduates must be Board Certified or eligible (must complete Board Certification within one year of hire, Louisiana excluded).
