Overview:

The Medical Laboratory Technician I is responsible for conducting clinical tests across various sections such as general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology. This role encompasses all tasks essential for delivering precise and timely results, including quality assurance, performance enhancement, proficiency evaluations, and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment.

The technician identifies abnormal critical values and adheres to established protocols for notifying the medical team of significant findings. Additionally, this position involves clerical duties, general laboratory operations, and phlebotomy tasks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Upholds the standards of the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
  • Ensures that the organization’s philosophy and core values are reflected in the service provided to patients.
  • Specimen Collection and Management – collects blood specimens through venipuncture and/or fingerstick, ensuring accurate identification and labeling; manages pneumatic tube systems; follows protocols for processing and testing specimens, including operating various centrifuges; collects other designated patient specimens as per procedure manuals.
  • Result Management – identifies errors or unlikely results and takes necessary actions; reports critical values according to established policies; conducts tests within specified timeframes; performs laboratory analyses in designated sections: Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, and Microbiology; executes blood bank procedures, including crossmatching and dispensing blood products; operates laboratory automated analyzers following established protocols.
  • Conducts, analyzes, and documents quality control measures in accordance with Policy & Procedure, adhering to CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO standards; performs and records Performance Improvement metrics and communicates results.
  • Executes routine daily and periodic preventative maintenance with proper documentation; troubleshoots minor issues and initiates service requests as necessary; manages inventory of supplies/reagents; reviews policy & procedure manuals; dates reagents and discards those that are expired.
  • Takes initiative for personal and professional development and ongoing education.
  • Aids in the training of new staff and students in laboratory protocols.
  • Complies with CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA regulations.
  • Adheres to established safety protocols, infection control measures, security guidelines, compliance requirements, and the handling of hazardous materials.
  • Utilizes Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Hospital Information Systems (HIS) effectively to perform, charge, and report laboratory results.
  • Completes annual competency assessments successfully and within designated timelines.

Qualifications:
Education/Skills: Associate's degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent laboratory training and experience as defined by CLIA regulations.

Experience:
No prior experience is required for graduates of an accredited clinical laboratory training program. Alternatively, six months of approved clinical laboratory experience is necessary, which must include a clinical rotation through Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids within the last five years in a U.S. accredited laboratory.

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:
State Licensure is required in Louisiana. New graduates must be Board Certified or eligible (must complete Board Certification within one year of hire, Louisiana excluded).
