Job Description Summary:
The University of Kansas Medical Center is actively seeking exceptional candidates to contribute to our Cancer Prevention and Control research initiatives. We are looking for individuals who will significantly impact our population science efforts aimed at reducing cancer health disparities throughout various life stages. Areas of focus include tobacco cessation, lifestyle and obesity interventions, cancer risk biomarkers, genetics, screening, early detection, and survivorship care. Candidates should possess a forward-thinking research agenda that emphasizes the adoption of evidence-based practices through innovative methodologies and robust research techniques. We anticipate multiple hires for tenure-track positions at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, with consideration for mid-career researchers as well.

The University of Kansas Medical Center is recognized as the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in the region, providing patients with access to leading-edge therapies, innovative clinical trials, and top-tier research. Our Cancer Prevention and Control Program comprises over 50 researchers across multiple campuses and disciplines, including Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Nursing, Nutrition, Population Health, and Psychology. The Masonic Cancer Alliance serves as our outreach network, connecting hospitals, oncologists, primary care providers, and patients throughout the region to enhance the quality and accessibility of prevention, early detection, treatment, and survivorship care. Our investigators benefit from outstanding campus resources that facilitate community engagement, quantitative analysis, and health informatics, fostering collaboration across various clinical domains and institutes.

The Department of Population Health, situated within the School of Medicine, offers a dynamic interdisciplinary research environment in an academic medical setting. We are dedicated to addressing health inequities in both rural and urban communities through sustained partnerships with local organizations, governmental bodies, healthcare systems, and other stakeholders. The Department has maintained the Kansas Cancer Registry since 1994 and has established long-term collaborations with state and regional health authorities, providing a rich landscape for impactful implementation science and community-engaged research. With faculty located across three campuses, the Department supports graduate education leading to degrees such as MHSA, MPH, MSCR, and PhD.

Required Qualifications:
  • Doctorate or equivalent in a relevant population health field (e.g., nursing, medicine, public health, or health-related behavioral/social sciences).
  • Demonstrated research focus in Cancer Prevention and Control.
  • Potential for securing external funding through participation in relevant grants and contracts.
  • Record of scholarly publications in peer-reviewed journals.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Evidence of principal investigator experience.
  • Demonstrated involvement in team science, implementation science, or translational research.
  • Experience in supervising and mentoring doctoral candidates.
Job Duties:
  • Develop and maintain a robust research program with external funding relevant to expertise.
  • Collaborate with faculty members through interdisciplinary research teams.
  • Teach and engage in graduate-level course development.
  • Contribute to the academic community through participation in departmental and university committees.
  • Provide service to the university, profession, and community as appropriate.
  • Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned by the Department Chair.

Comprehensive Benefits Package:
Health, dental, and vision insurance coverage begins on the first day of employment, along with health expense accounts featuring generous employer contributions for those enrolled in a qualifying health plan. Additional benefits include employer-paid life insurance, long-term disability insurance, and various voluntary insurance options. Paid time off, including vacation and sick leave, accrues from the start of employment, along with ten paid holidays. Additional paid discretionary leave is available after six months, and bereavement, jury duty, military service, and parental leave are provided after one year of service.
