Lead Backend Systems Engineer (Remote, Contract)

Job Overview:

The Lead Backend Systems Engineer plays a crucial role in the design, development, and deployment of resilient server-side architectures for interactive gaming experiences. This position also involves providing guidance and support to junior engineers. Candidates must be located within the PST-EST time zones for this contract opportunity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and architect innovative backend systems for gaming applications.
  • Continuously enhance and optimize backend functionalities throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with messaging and database technologies to establish essential features for game development.
  • Partner with designers and fellow engineers to create and implement server-side functionalities.
  • Improve code efficiency to maximize CPU performance and minimize memory usage.
  • Diagnose and resolve internal and live server challenges as required.
  • Produce technical specifications and designs for new server capabilities.
  • Write and troubleshoot server-side programming.
  • Create advanced tools and utilities to facilitate server development.
  • Proactively identify and address potential issues, implementing preventative measures.
  • Mentor and support junior engineers, sharing technical knowledge and advocating for best practices.
  • Maintain effective communication with other development teams (e.g., Art, Design, and Audio) to ensure integrated project development.
  • Provide accurate time estimates for task completion.
  • Additional responsibilities of a similar nature may be assigned as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years in software development.
  • Expertise in C++ programming.
  • Familiarity with networked game client/server frameworks.
  • Experience in Linux-based development.
  • Excellent communication abilities.
  • Strong architectural skills with a keen eye for detail.
  • Proficient in writing clear, maintainable, and portable code.
  • Advanced debugging capabilities.
  • Knowledge of backend service architecture on Linux.
  • Must reside within the Pacific Time Zone (PST) to the Eastern Time Zone (EST).

Preferred Skills:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in MMO game development is advantageous.
  • Background in a live environment (ongoing product support post-launch).
  • Familiarity with cloud technologies and Kubernetes.
  • Proficient in core debugging using GDB.
