Your Role

The Product Development and Engineering division is the heartbeat of Magic Leap's transformative AR technology. Our dynamic teams are engaged in pioneering engineering and technical operations, conducting advanced scientific research and development that evolves as we innovate to create new AR products, features, and marketplaces. Responsibilities include conducting research, design, development, and implementation to enhance Magic Leap's AR offerings; designing, constructing, testing, and operating equipment; ensuring adherence to quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness, and performance standards in production; interpreting technical plans and specifications; and collaborating across teams to ensure our AR products deliver a high-quality, immersive experience that meets and exceeds customer expectations and business goals.

As a Lead Optical Systems Engineer on our Hardware Engineering team, you will collaborate with a skilled cross-functional group to design and produce cutting-edge optical components for AR/MR devices. Our team promotes a hands-on, cooperative environment that encourages engineering excellence, creativity, and innovation across the fields of optical metrology, testing, device fabrication, display technologies, image processing, and color science.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop new testing metrics, test stations, and alignment systems for prototype components and subsystems that evaluate image quality, radiometric, and colorimetric properties to measure performance.
  • Work with other engineering teams to comprehend the critical design parameters of their technologies and how to assess them effectively.
  • Facilitate the automation of image capture and processing to enhance efficiency and consistency.
  • Analyze component and subsystem test results using image processing algorithms to quantify performance against established benchmarks.
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in image processing or computer vision, utilizing Matlab, Python, and/or C++.
  • Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • Experience in image processing and computer vision focused on display image quality assessment and feature detection.
  • Background in test automation and developing custom optical testing or alignment systems, preferably with equipment APIs and automation.
  • Experience in a laboratory environment with optical testing equipment, including designing and conducting experiments and analyzing results to draw meaningful conclusions.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience troubleshooting new optical metrology tools and conducting repeatability tests, summarizing results with appropriate statistical methods.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced setting and deliver high-quality results to various stakeholders.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration across departments.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with image processing libraries such as OpenCV, Scipy, Pillow, etc.
  • Experience with optical metrology techniques and instrumentation, including camera and imaging systems.
  • Knowledge of color science and colorimetry.
  • Experience in the AR/VR sector.
