Job Description / Essential Elements:

Purpose Statement: The job of Food Service Assistant I is done for the purpose of preparing and distributing food items for consumption by students and school personnel and maintaining facilities in a sanitary condition. Incumbents in this classification provide students and staff with clean and sanitary facilities that directly support learning.

Essential Functions:

  • Food Preparation and Service: Arranges food and beverage items for the purpose of making them available to students and staff.
  • Cleaning and Sanitation: Cleans utensils, equipment, and the storage, food preparation, and serving areas for the purpose of maintaining sanitary conditions.
  • Payment Collection: Collects payments for food items for the purpose of securing funds for reimbursement of items selected.
  • Inventory Management: Inspects food items and/or supplies for the purpose of verifying quantity and specifications of orders and/or complying with mandated health requirements.
  • Logistics and Transportation: Loads carts for the purpose of ensuring that food and/or beverage items are available for delivery to other sites.
  • Supervision and Guidance: Oversees student workers for the purpose of providing guidance in their job functions.
  • Reporting and Record-Keeping: Prepares daily item counts and associated reports for the purpose of providing documentation for items served.
  • Food Safety and Quality Control: Prepares food and beverage items for the purpose of meeting mandated nutritional and projected meal requirements.
  • Financial Management: Reconciles cash transactions and item counts for the purpose of balancing financial and daily inventory accounts.
  • Customer Service: Responds to inquiries of students, staff, and the public for the purpose of providing information and/or direction regarding the type and/or cost of meals.
  • Food Storage and Handling: Serves one or more items of food for the purpose of meeting mandated nutritional requirements and/or requests of students and school personnel.
  • Supply Management: Stocks food, condiments, and supplies for the purpose of maintaining adequate quantities and security of items.
  • Transportation and Delivery: Transports food items, supplies, and/or equipment to various satellite school cafeterias and other off-campus locations for the purpose of delivering requested items to designated sites in a timely manner.

Other Functions:

  • Food Preparation Assistance: Assists in preparing food items for the purpose of meeting mandated nutritional and projected meal requirements.
  • Team Support: Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: Job-related experience is desired.
  • Certifications: Food Handler's Certificate within 20 days of hire.

Clearances:

  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance: Required.
  • TB Clearance: Required.
