We are currently seeking a Mid-Level Environmental Scientist to join our Environmental Planning and Compliance team within the Biology Group.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the lead environmental scientist on staff.
  • Conduct general and targeted biological surveys, including protocol-sensitive species assessments and habitat evaluations for sensitive species.
  • Prepare biological technical reports.
  • Assist with data collection and management tasks.
  • Understand CEQA and NEPA regulations, as well as local MSHCPs and federal and state permits.
  • Monitor compliance during construction activities.
  • Collaborate with fellow scientists on the team.

Qualifications & Skills Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in biological sciences.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a biologist in Southern California.
  • Experience in ornithology and familiarity with avian species of special concern.
  • Proficiency in conducting protocol and focused wildlife surveys.
  • Ability to identify native plant species and vegetation communities.
  • Experience with habitat assessments, vegetation mapping, and general biological reconnaissance surveys.
  • Knowledge of environmental compliance and monitoring practices.
  • Strong writing skills for various biological technical documents.
  • Ability to coordinate with applicants and agency personnel on mitigation strategies.
  • Assist with data collection, entry, and management.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

  • Valid USFWS 10(a)1(A) permit for conducting wildlife protocol surveys for species in Southern California, including but not limited to least Bell's vireo, California gnatcatchers, and others.
  • Familiarity with regulatory agency permitting processes and negotiations.
  • Experience with sensitive bird species not listed under the Endangered Species Act.
  • Proficient in identifying native plant species, including rare plants.
  • Competence in using Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Google Earth, and related software.
  • Experience with GPS units/software, ArcGIS, ArcCollector, and sub-meter field data collection.

Work Environment:

The Environmental Scientist must be capable of working in extreme temperatures for extended periods and be prepared for strenuous physical activities, such as hiking for hours while carrying equipment.
