Mechanical Engineering Faculty Position

The School of Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET) at St. Mary's University, a distinguished private Catholic institution, invites applications for two tenure-track positions at the assistant, associate, or full professor level in the field of mechanical engineering. The successful candidates will be expected to teach a wide array of courses within the mechanical engineering curriculum.

Position Overview:

  • Teaching Responsibilities: The selected candidates will be responsible for delivering high-quality undergraduate education in mechanical engineering. A passion for teaching and mentoring students, along with the ability to cultivate critical thinking skills, is essential for preparing future engineers for the challenges they will face in their careers.
  • Research Expectations: Candidates are expected to develop an independent and impactful research agenda in their area of expertise, involving undergraduate students in their research endeavors. We encourage interdisciplinary collaboration both within the department and with other fields to tackle complex global issues.
  • Service Commitment: Active engagement in departmental activities, committees, and university service is anticipated. Candidates will contribute to the academic community and uphold the university's Marianist values.
Qualifications:
  • Educational Background: Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline at the time of appointment. Candidates who are ABD and expected to complete their degree within one year will also be considered.
  • Research Record: A demonstrated record of scholarly accomplishments or strong potential for impactful research in a specific area of expertise is required. Candidates whose research interests engage undergraduate students and complement existing departmental strengths are particularly encouraged to apply.
  • Teaching Excellence: A commitment to outstanding teaching and a desire to engage students through both traditional and innovative pedagogical methods are essential. Previous teaching experience is advantageous.
  • Collaborative Skills: Proven ability or potential to collaborate effectively with colleagues within the department and across various disciplines.
  • Commitment to Values: A dedication to embracing and promoting the Marianist values is essential.
About the Engineering Department:

The Engineering Department encompasses six additional engineering majors alongside mechanical engineering. The position also supports other engineering disciplines within the department. Opportunities for interdisciplinary research are available within the department and across the School of Science, Engineering, and Technology. The successful candidates will actively contribute to the mission of St. Mary's University, particularly in teaching effectively, establishing a robust research program with undergraduate student involvement, and participating in all departmental activities. Strong oral and written communication skills are crucial.
