The Senior Vice President of Finance will be instrumental in ensuring the organization's financial soundness, operational effectiveness, and strategic vision. This role requires an experienced leader with a successful history of guiding teams through change and exhibiting excellence in financial stewardship within the nonprofit arena. The SVP of Finance will collaborate closely with the CEO and the executive leadership team to guarantee that the organization's strategic goals are achieved with a focus on sustainability and excellence.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline. An advanced degree or CPA designation is preferred.

Experience: A minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience, including direct team management and at least 3 years in an executive-level role. Experience in nonprofit organizations and familiarity with United Way operations is highly desirable.

Skills: Outstanding analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities. Advanced proficiency in accounting software (Sage Intacct preferred), Microsoft Office Suite, and a solid understanding of IT/business infrastructure and HRIS systems.

Leadership: Proven capability to lead organizational development and transformation, with a history of building high-performing, diverse teams. Strong emotional intelligence and the ability to navigate complex relationships and diverse communities are essential.

Communication: Exceptional executive-level writing and verbal communication skills, with the capacity to influence and engage a wide array of stakeholders effectively.

Innovation and Creativity: Demonstrated ability to foster innovation and creativity, while staying informed about current and emerging trends affecting the nonprofit sector.

Financial Acumen: The SVP of Finance possesses a thorough understanding of financial and management principles critical for guiding the organization’s fiscal health. This includes expertise in financial reporting, forecasting, and cultivating a culture of fiscal responsibility. As a skilled budget manager, the SVP excels in various financial areas, including revenue recognition, business planning, and cash flow analysis, ensuring effective asset management and availability of funds.

Strategic Business Partner: Collaborating with the CEO and the executive management team, the SVP plays a key role in shaping and executing the organization’s strategic initiatives while continuously assessing financial performance against the annual budget and long-term objectives.

Fiduciary Officer: The SVP is dedicated to the organization’s best interests, ensuring compliance with financial and tax regulations, and safeguarding operations from financial risks. This role involves diligent communication and enforcement of policies, as well as establishing robust internal controls.

Enterprise Risk Manager: The SVP is responsible for strategic planning and implementing measures to proactively mitigate potential risks that could adversely affect the organization’s finances and budget.

Communications: The SVP is expected to convey ideas clearly and persuasively, demonstrating active listening and a proactive approach in soliciting feedback from staff and stakeholders.

Innovation/Creativity: The SVP aligns with the vision of UWCE, playing a crucial role in crafting a unified vision that connects the team and community towards shared goals.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership: Collaborate with the CEO and senior leadership team to develop and implement strategic plans that align with UWCE's mission and budget.

  • Contribute as a key member of the senior leadership team in determining strategic priorities and new business development.
  • Support staff and board in designing, prioritizing, and monitoring progress on strategic initiatives and financial management.

Financial Management: Oversee all aspects of financial planning, management, and reporting, ensuring accuracy and integrity in financial statements and budgeting.

  • Lead the finance committee and prepare annual budgets and financial projections.
  • Present financial reports to the board of directors and coordinate annual audits.
  • Establish and monitor fiscal controls to ensure adherence to high standards of financial policy.

Operational Excellence: Directly manage a team overseeing finance, human resources, IT, and facilities, implementing process improvements for enhanced efficiency.

  • Oversee human resources to attract and retain top talent, ensuring a supportive employee experience.
  • Act as the organization’s Ethics Officer and manage facilities operations.

Risk Management and Compliance: Ensure effective internal controls and compliance with all fiscal and legal regulations.

  • Serve as the liaison to legal counsel for organizational legal matters.

Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including staff, board members, donors, and community partners.

Physical Demands

This position primarily involves working at a desk, utilizing a computer and phone. It requires effective communication skills and visual acuity to perform essential functions.
