Position Summary
This role involves performing advanced professional accounting and auditing tasks, focusing on the management of intricate departmental funds and financial documentation. The selected candidate will provide essential support to the Special Education Department.
Supervision StructureThe position operates under the general oversight of a senior accountant, division manager, or department director.
Team LeadershipThis role includes the oversight of clerical and junior accounting personnel, ensuring effective workflow and productivity.
Required QualificationsA Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, public administration, or a related discipline is required, along with 24 quarter credits or equivalent semester credits in accounting courses. Candidates must possess a minimum of five years of accounting experience, with at least two years in a role equivalent to Accountant 2.
Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesStrong understanding of advanced governmental accounting, auditing standards, and financial reporting is essential. Candidates should be well-versed in laws and regulations pertaining to departmental accounting, as well as budgetary principles and practices.
Proficiency in using standard spreadsheet, database, and mainframe software for financial analysis and forecasting is necessary. The ability to utilize microcomputers and other financial tools effectively is also required.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe following duties are representative of the role but may not encompass all tasks performed:
- Maintain budgetary control accounts and prepare comprehensive budgets and financial reports.
- Develop recommendations for future budgetary needs and strategies.
- Design and implement accounting systems and procedures within the department.
- Oversee the scheduling and planning of work processes related to the management of funds.
- Evaluate and recommend improvements to accounting procedures and methods.
- Conduct internal audits to verify the accuracy of various financial documents and reports.
- Compile and present detailed accounting reports and financial statements.
This is a full-time position, requiring 40 hours of work per week. Salary and benefits are determined in accordance with the negotiated labor agreement.
