Job Overview

Position Title: Engineer

Department: Facility Operations

Work Schedule: Day shifts, including rotating weekends and holidays

Employment Type: Full-time (80 hours per pay period) + eligible for benefits

FTE: 1.0

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Operate and manage mechanical systems including engines, compressors, generators, pumps, and steam boilers during assigned shifts.
  2. Monitor water levels in boilers and tanks; assess meters, recorders, and pressure gauges; adjust valves as necessary to ensure compliance with operational standards.
  3. Perform daily maintenance tasks on boilers and associated equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  4. Conduct water quality tests and apply necessary chemicals to prevent scale buildup.
  5. Execute repairs and scheduled maintenance on boilers as required.
  6. Regularly inspect all mechanical areas during shifts.
  7. Provide preventive maintenance and repair services to various equipment and structures throughout the facility.
  8. Test and inspect utilities and backup systems to ensure proper functionality and maintain accurate records.
  9. Assist with snow and ice removal as well as other landscaping maintenance tasks.
  10. Conduct safety checks on biomedical equipment in the absence of the Biomedical Technician.
  11. Support other hospital staff as needed, including security and environmental services.
  12. Communicate project and work order statuses to relevant personnel.
  13. Participate in internal meetings and training sessions, adhering to policy reviews.
  14. Complete necessary documentation for quality assurance and inter-departmental communication.
  15. Engage in special projects and additional duties as assigned to uphold facility standards.

  17. Conduct fire alarm system tests, including scheduled drills, and maintain documentation for all fire safety and utility systems.
  18. Ensure compliance with documentation requirements set by regulatory agencies.

Skills & Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 80 pounds.
  • Capability to distinguish colors for testing purposes.
  • Comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Adept at identifying unusual sounds from equipment.
  • Experience operating heavy machinery.
  • Strong general maintenance skills.
  • Basic proficiency in computer usage.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated skills in building trades such as plumbing or HVAC.

Education & Experience:

Minimum:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred:

  • Two to three years of experience in Facility Operations within a healthcare setting.
  • Formal training through union or trade schools; documented job training will be considered.

Licenses/Certifications:

Minimum:

  • Current City of Chicago Operating Engineers license.
  • Valid Illinois Driver's License.

Preferred:

  • Certification in building trades (e.g., plumbing, HVAC).

Working Environment:

Regular exposure to machinery, high noise levels, hazardous chemicals, and temperature extremes. Occasional contact with hazardous or infectious materials may occur.
