Job Title: Quality Inspector

Overview

Fairbanks Morse Defense is seeking a Quality Inspector to enhance our quality assurance department. This role is crucial in inspecting all products and supporting manufacturing processes. The Quality Inspector will be responsible for evaluating both manufactured and procured equipment components, improving inspection and manufacturing processes, and aligning with the company’s strategic objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct inspections of parts and assemblies using appropriate measuring and testing equipment to ensure compliance with specifications and instructions. This includes reviewing supplier documentation to support incoming inspection activities. Inspections will occur during receipt, in-process, and final inspection phases, with results documented clearly and concisely.
  • Perform visual inspections of welds to verify adherence to acceptance criteria outlined in specifications and codes during various inspection phases.
  • Review job records against sales order documentation and manufactured equipment to confirm compliance with job requirements.
  • Assist manufacturing personnel by interpreting drawings and instructions to clarify job requirements.
  • Execute testing procedures (Leak, Permeability, Dimensional, etc.) in accordance with established Quality Procedures and Work Instructions.
  • Document and report any nonconformance in a clear and comprehensive manner, including tagging, form completion, and log entry. Follow up on nonconformance to assist in determining solutions and verifying repairs.
  • Communicate effectively with shop personnel and management regarding inspection results, nonconformance, schedules, and instructions.
  • Manage calibration of meters and testing equipment, including documentation and requisitioning for necessary calibrations.
  • Participate in and adhere to all company safety initiatives, including the Find-it/Fix-it program.
  • Support Job Safety Analysis activities as directed by management.
  • Generate and update quality management system documents as assigned.
  • Review customer specifications and assist in preparing quality documents for customer and supplier submissions.
  • Engage in regulatory, internal, customer, and third-party audits in collaboration with other quality functions.
  • Interface with customers to support on-site inspections.
  • Maintain cleanliness in QA work areas to support the company’s 5S initiatives.
  • Follow safe work practices by participating in required training and reporting safety incidents promptly.
  • Support the HAF ISO quality system in alignment with organizational goals.
  • Complete assigned tasks and projects in a timely manner as directed by the Quality Engineer or Quality Manager.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in quality management systems such as ISO 9001, and mechanical inspection in a manufacturing or service environment.
  • Experience in welding, weld inspection, forging, casting, fabrication, machining, or assembly of mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to qualify as an AWS Certified Welding Inspector and VT Level II Inspector.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects with deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including active listening and clear communication (both oral and written).
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with co-workers, customers, and vendors.
  • High ethical standards and integrity.
  • Good analytical skills.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in a related field.
  • Professional certifications (AWS CWI, ASQ, ASNT).
  • Additional quality and business certifications such as Six Sigma or Lean.
  • Working knowledge of quality programs.
  • Familiarity with current ERP/MRP systems is preferred.
