Position Title: Licensed Practical Nurse Supervisor

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The role of the Licensed Practical Nurse Supervisor involves executing a range of healthcare tasks under the guidance of the Registered Nurse and/or the unit/shift Supervisor. This encompasses, but is not limited to, overseeing a unit and administering prescribed medications.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must hold a valid license in the State of New York.
  • Capable of fulfilling job responsibilities both mentally and physically.
  • Exhibits leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Possesses keen observational abilities to identify changes in resident conditions.
  • Able to effectively coordinate unit operations through team nursing assignments.
  • Maintains accurate and meaningful documentation of services rendered.

PROFESSIONAL APPEARANCE:
  • Adhere to the required uniform policy.
  • Uniform must be clean, well-fitted, and include a name tag and title.
  • Shoes should be clean, white, rubber-soled, and compliant with nursing regulations.
  • Makeup should be tasteful and moderate.
  • Maintain neat and clean hair, hands, and fingernails.
  • Jewelry should be limited to a simple ring and wristwatch.
  • Uphold high standards of personal hygiene at all times.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Account for and sign for controlled substances with the outgoing nurse. Report any discrepancies to the supervisor immediately.
  • Receive reports via electronic medical records (EMR) and from the outgoing nurse. Ensure possession of necessary keys.
  • Monitor the temperature of the medication refrigerator and check expiration dates on medications stored within.
  • Sign for medications delivered by the pharmacy vendor.
  • Observe, document, and report any significant changes in residents' medical conditions to the head nurse or supervisor.
  • Review physician orders for updates and ensure they are accurately reflected in EMR or other relevant records.
  • Be mindful of residents fasting for lab work and communicate this information to the staff.
  • Prepare supplies for medication administration, ensuring everything is properly dated and organized.
  • Implement a system to verify medication labels for accuracy and expiration.
  • Remove discontinued medications from the medication cart promptly and return them to the pharmacy.
  • Keep medication and treatment carts locked and secured when not in use.
  • Practice hand hygiene before handling the medication cart.
  • Verify resident identification before administering medications, ensuring compliance with all protocols.
  • Document all PRN medications and refusals in EMR.
  • Maintain hand hygiene between administering medications to different residents.
  • Provide guidance and discipline to subordinate staff as necessary.
  • Administer medications according to established protocols, ensuring resident privacy is maintained.
  • Assist residents during meal times as needed.
  • Ensure the medication room remains locked at all times.
  • Document all treatments performed in EMR.
  • Ensure the medication and treatment cart is clean and restocked at the end of each shift.
  • Discard soiled dressings appropriately.
  • Assist with the orientation of new nursing staff.
  • Participate in scheduled in-service training and staff meetings.
  • Report any unusual medication incidents to the supervisor and assist in completing necessary documentation.
  • Assume charge nurse responsibilities when required.
  • Stay informed about the medications being dispensed, including their actions and side effects.
  • Perform additional nursing functions as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Remain on duty during emergencies until adequate staffing is ensured.
  • Follow proper procedures for medication disposal and handling.
  • Ensure compliance with all medication administration protocols.
