Position Overview:

The Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections (ADJC) is in search of a dedicated Youth Correctional Administrator who is committed to positively impacting the lives of Arizona's youth. Under the guidance of the Secure Care Bureau Administrator, the Youth Correctional Administrator will oversee the secure and efficient operations of the Housing Units at Adobe Mountain School while leading facility management initiatives. This role entails ensuring high-quality service delivery across all programs, which includes evaluating service effectiveness, developing and implementing improvement processes, and fostering collaboration among various programs to achieve shared objectives. Key Responsibilities:


• Establish and implement goals and objectives that prioritize the safety and security of youth, staff, and visitors.

• Provide ongoing specialized training focused on security and safety concerns within the housing units; mentor staff in effective interventions to minimize violent incidents, instill skills for setting and enforcing expectations, and recommend enhancements for security measures.

• Directly supervise Housing Unit Managers while providing indirect oversight to Sergeants, YPOIII's, and Correctional Officers.

• Mentor and guide staff assigned to Adobe Mountain School; coach personnel to ensure they uphold security, custody, control, and accountability of the youth population.

• Conduct inspections of youth living areas and staff workspaces to ensure compliance with security, sanitation, and safety standards.

• Complete employee evaluations, conduct one-on-one meetings, and provide training, coaching, and mentoring to meet agency training requirements.

• Participate in the hiring process, preparing and submitting requests for disciplinary actions to appropriate agency personnel.

• Draft and interpret various reports, including scheduling reports, quality assurance reports, incident reports, and readiness for release documentation.

• Analyze data for trends, deficiencies, and compliance; actively participate as a representative in agency meetings and work groups.

• Oversee and audit staff scheduling to ensure compliance with youth/staff ratios as per established guidelines.

• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of:

• State juvenile justice systems

• Human behavior dynamics and crisis intervention strategies

• Computerized documentation systems

• Correctional management practices and policies

• Federal, state, and agency regulations governing juvenile correctional facility operations

• Supervisory and managerial methodologies

• Communication systems, including two-way radios and other devices

Skills in:

• Basic mathematics

• Leadership, supervision, and training

• Motivational and instructional techniques

• Proficient use of computer applications (Microsoft Office and Google Workspace)

Ability to:

• Understand and apply Federal, State, and Agency regulations

• Adhere to agency policies and procedures

• Implement youth management and treatment techniques

• Utilize radio communication effectively

• Apply security practices, including crisis intervention techniques

• Understand educational and vocational program requirements

• De-escalate youth behaviors

• Collaborate closely with adjudicated youth in a secure environment

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate should possess the following qualifications:

• A minimum of 3 years of experience as a Youth Program Supervisor

• OR equivalent positions with comparable responsibilities

• OR 4 years of experience working with youth in structured activities and 2 years of supervisory experience

• OR a Bachelor's Degree in social or behavioral science may substitute for 2 years of supervisory experience.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Candidates must meet specific requirements, including possessing a valid driver's license if driving is essential to the role. All new hires are subject to the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify) and must successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation, behavioral assessment, drug screening, and physical examination. Current State of Arizona employees must demonstrate acceptable performance history to be considered for this position.
