Position Overview

The Registered Nurse in the Infusion Unit is accountable for the comprehensive planning and execution of patient care through the nursing process, which includes assessment, implementation, and evaluation. This role involves overseeing the care plan, employing effective problem-solving techniques, and integrating evidence-based practices. The nurse is expected to uphold the quality standards of a Magnet-designated institution and adhere to the Patient Bill of Rights. This position operates under the guidance of the Nursing Manager/Director and requires a commitment to continuous learning. The nurse will provide compassionate, family-centered care specifically for patients in the Hematology/Oncology specialty.

Key Responsibilities

Conducts thorough nursing assessments for all patients, ensuring effective communication regarding patient progress, including critical findings or changes in condition to the healthcare team.
Completes comprehensive patient admission histories and discharge plans in accordance with established policies, covering medication and allergy histories, as well as spiritual, cultural, developmental, educational, and psychosocial needs.
Verifies the accuracy of patient treatment protocols and physician orders, administering chemotherapy and supportive medications while adhering to established medication administration and chemotherapy guidelines. Ensures the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and the safe disposal of hazardous materials in compliance with hospital policies.
Provides specialized nursing care for immunocompromised patients, including monitoring central lines, performing lab draws, administering blood products, and overseeing sepsis and electrolyte management.
Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to develop, implement, and document patient care plans, ensuring safe and efficient care delivery.
Delegates nursing responsibilities based on staff qualifications and competencies.
Conducts reassessments as required by policy, particularly when there are changes in the care plan, after administering analgesics, or following other interventions.
Educates patients and families on health-related topics, documenting teaching on disease processes, medications, chemotherapy, discharge planning, safety, nutrition, and more. Communicates available resources to patients and families.
Strives to maintain a high-quality, error-free environment by consistently delivering safe and effective care. This includes assessing bodily systems, preventing medication errors, avoiding falls, and ensuring thorough hand-offs.
Ensures compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards set forth by relevant healthcare organizations.

Qualifications

Active RN Licensure in the State of Florida or Multi-State Enhanced Nursing License Compact (eNLC).
Current American Heart Association BLS certification.
PALS certification required within one year of hire.
Completion of the APHON Pediatric Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider Course required within one year of hire.

Skills and Competencies

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree or currently enrolled in a BSN program.
At least one year of experience as an RN in a Pediatric Hematology/Oncology setting is preferred.
Proficiency in computer systems and Electronic Medical Records (EMR) is preferred.
National certification as a Certified Pediatric Nurse (CPHON or CPON) or BMTCN is preferred within five years of hire.
Ability to analyze and interpret clinical data to inform patient care decisions.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Capacity to positively influence others and hold oneself and colleagues accountable.
Ability to work effectively in a collaborative healthcare environment.
Competence in applying evidence-based practices and analytical thinking in nursing care.
Flexibility to float to various nursing units as needed while maintaining high standards of clinical excellence.
Willingness to provide coverage for on-call assignments as per departmental policies.
