Transit Equipment Mechanic

Position Summary:
Under general oversight, this role involves executing skilled mechanical tasks related to diagnosing issues, performing preventive maintenance, and repairing various types of transit vehicles, whether in the maintenance facility or on-site. Responsibilities include overhauling major mechanical components and conducting comprehensive mechanical and safety inspections of transit coaches, along with other related duties as assigned.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct mechanical repairs and maintenance on diesel, hybrid, and electric transit coaches, as well as standard passenger vehicles, including the removal, replacement, repair, and overhaul of major and minor components, such as engines and transmissions.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and rectify mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic system malfunctions.
- Inspect, test, adjust, repair, and replace integral parts of gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and electric engines, including transmissions, drive units, drive shafts, differentials, and various systems.
- Overhaul and test engines and transmissions to meet specifications; disassemble, clean, inspect, replace worn or defective parts, and reassemble.
- Install, maintain, and repair various auxiliary systems, equipment, and electronics.
- Fabricate and machine parts, as well as perform acetylene and electrical welding.
- Utilize hydraulic lifts, hoists, jacks, cranes, and diagnostic software.
- May be tasked by the Maintenance Supervisor to instruct or oversee others.
- Document work performed, materials utilized, and time expended.

Compensation and Work Schedule:
This is a full-time, non-exempt position eligible for a comprehensive union benefits package. The starting wage is competitive, with opportunities for increases based on performance and tenure. The Fleet Maintenance section operates across multiple shifts, and employees may be required to work any shift, including varied days off.
Technical Skills:
Incumbents are expected to be proficient in relevant software and capable of training others in its use.
Qualifications:
Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job effectively. Typical qualifications include:
- Four years of experience in mechanical repair for medium to heavy-duty trucks and/or bus maintenance.
- An Associate's degree in Applied Science, such as Automotive/Diesel Technology, or completion of an approved technical or vocational program.
This position is classified as Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
Preferred Qualifications:
- ASE Certification, particularly in Master Transit Bus.
- A valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to obtain a valid Class B CDL with a Passenger Endorsement within three months of employment.
On-the-Job Training:
A minimum of one year, but less than two years, of on-the-job training is typically required for effective job performance. Continuous training and development will be expected to stay current with evolving technologies and practices.
Work Independence:
Incumbents will perform routine tasks with minimal supervision, following established instructions or procedures.
Communication:
This role necessitates regular communication within and outside the organization to exchange factual information, including explanations of policies and procedures.
Working Conditions:
Work is conducted in various environments, with exposure to different weather conditions and potentially challenging situations.
