Overview:
Are you an innovative engineer with a passion for developing and maintaining engineering solutions? The Engineering Services Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is looking for a proficient Natural Gas Mechanical Engineer. In this pivotal role, you will oversee system engineering to support operations, construction, preventive and corrective maintenance, and ensure compliance with regulations for LANL's natural gas distribution assets.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Act as the primary technical expert for all facets of assigned natural gas systems.
  • Conduct annual assessments of natural gas system assets and propose maintenance and enhancement projects.
  • Provide engineering support for operations and maintenance programs adhering to relevant codes and standards.
  • Engage in engineering oversight of natural gas infrastructure construction and maintenance activities.
  • Lead technical efforts related to cathodic protection and leak inspections, determining necessary corrective actions.
  • Serve as a pressure safety representative in accordance with LANL and industry standards.
  • Execute system modeling to assess new service requests and identify system constraints.
  • Contribute to natural gas transportation contracting by estimating annual usage, monthly supply nominations, and seasonal hedging recommendations.
  • Prepare documentation, studies, calculations, and reports for natural gas systems as mandated by regulatory bodies.
  • Develop and review project drawings and specifications for new service connections and facility upgrades.
  • Apply industry-recognized codes and standards, along with LANL engineering standards, to project designs for distribution and service lines, regulator stations, valves, and meters.
  • Review and approve vendor submissions and design modifications as necessary for project completion.
  • Establish inspection criteria and perform field observations to validate construction and maintenance work.
  • Maintain technical baseline as-built documentation to ensure safe and reliable operations, maintenance, and construction.
Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements:
  • Experience in engineering, operations, or maintenance roles related to natural gas or similar pipeline systems.
  • Familiarity with pressure safety systems, including valves, regulators, metering, and relief devices.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards for natural gas systems.
  • Proficiency in hydraulic modeling, drafting, and mapping software.
  • Experience in long-term operational and strategic planning for utility reinvestment and asset management.
  • Proven track record in managing complex projects and resources.
Education/Experience:
For Engineer 2: Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Civil, or Electrical Engineering or a related field, along with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
For Engineer 3: Requires a Bachelor's Degree in the same fields with at least 6 years of relevant experience; an advanced engineering or technical degree is preferred.

Desired Skills:
  • EIT or Professional Engineering certification.
  • Knowledge of Class 4 natural gas distribution systems.
  • Training or certifications in cathodic protection and leak inspection.
  • Experience in compliance audit report preparation.
  • Familiarity with metering device evaluation, design, installation, and troubleshooting.
  • Understanding of DOE standards applicable to design implementation.
Work Environment: This position is based onsite in Los Alamos, NM.
