Key Responsibilities:
The Product Realization and Reliability Office (PRRO) within Pit Technologies is composed of a diverse team of engineers and scientists dedicated to supporting plutonium initiatives, including pit production, surveillance, research and development, and subcritical experiments across the entire Pit Technologies Division.
The PT Division is in search of Systems Engineers to deliver engineering analysis support for all production activities. This role encompasses detailed modeling of production processes such as metal refining, melting, casting, heat treatment, forming, machining, and welding. Additionally, comprehensive analytical support will be provided for the design and development of all PT tooling, fixtures, and custom process equipment.
The chosen candidate will undertake detailed analyses addressing a wide array of complex challenges that demand innovative, thorough, and practical solutions aligned with organizational goals. The analysis tasks will range from straightforward problems requiring classical hand calculations to advanced system-of-systems analyses. The analyst will be responsible for completing and documenting their work within agreed timelines and budgets. Furthermore, the selected individual will be expected to present their findings for peer reviews and participate as a peer reviewer for the work of fellow engineers.
Essential Qualifications:
- Proven experience in complex modeling and simulation (SysML, SymPy, etc.)
- Ability to establish, execute, debug, validate, and interpret results from failure mode and effects analyses, fault tree analyses, etc.
- Familiarity with commercial applications such as Cameo
- Strong documentation skills with a demonstrated ability to formally document technical results
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Strong presentation capabilities
- Proficient in applying fundamental techniques and engineering best practices
This position necessitates a Q clearance, which requires U.S. Citizenship except in rare circumstances. Selected candidates will undergo a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government for access to classified information.
Education and Experience:
A bachelor’s degree in Aero or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution is required, along with 4 years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- A Master's or PhD Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited institution.
- In-depth understanding of systems engineering fundamentals.
- Demonstrated experience in process modeling.
- Experience with mechanical testing (e.g., structural, thermal, fluid flow) to support model validation, including experiment design, planning, execution, data reduction, and correlation.
- Understanding of validation and verification methodologies.
- Fundamental knowledge of mechanical design engineering and the design process.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and MATLAB.
This position is based onsite in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are determined at the discretion of management.
