The Lighting and Stage Management Specialist will oversee the technical direction, stage management, and communication necessary for the department to deliver a professionally executed, well-structured, safe, and artistically compelling series of productions annually, with student involvement as the primary production team.
Key Responsibilities
Lighting Design:
Develop lighting concepts for dance productions involving students and faculty. Act as the primary contact for visiting companies or productions. Collaborate with external production designers and technical personnel to effectively implement design and production components. Serve as the intermediary between guest dance companies, department leadership, and technical staff during preparation for productions.
Stage Management:
Formulate a detailed technical and production schedule in partnership with department leadership and faculty directors. Organize and manage crew schedules, timelines, and personnel lists. Facilitate sign-up processes for student production crews. Provide guidance and oversight to students during crew calls and activities. Participate in regular workshop meetings to communicate updates and organize crews for upcoming events. Offer logistical and technical assistance for performances occurring off-site. Mentor students in lighting design and technical theater practices. Introduce students to the lighting design workflow. Collaborate with students on lighting design for their choreographic projects, providing informed support. Maintain departmental standards, fostering a positive and professional environment for students, while mentoring those interested in technical theater. Educate students on professional production protocols and the safe operation of production equipment.
Qualifications:
Relevant professional experience in technical theater and lighting design. A degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Comprehensive understanding of technical direction for dance and theatrical productions. Proven ability to design lighting for dance performances and a solid grasp of dance as an artistic discipline. Experience in mentoring and working with students, managing student crews, and providing training. Proficient stage management capabilities. Competence in creating and executing technical production timelines. Skills in setting up, operating, and maintaining theater and lighting equipment. Experience in promoting a diverse and inclusive environment and a commitment to equity in teaching and practice. Strong collaboration and communication skills, with a passion for working with faculty, staff, and students. Flexibility to work evenings and weekends to accommodate student performances.
Position Details:
This is a part-time hourly role. Benefits such as healthcare, life insurance, retirement, and leave are not included. Compliance with federal and state regulations limits part-time, non-benefited employees to a maximum of twenty-nine hours per week on average.
