Sterile Processing Technician Job Summary

Under the supervision of a senior technician, the Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for decontaminating, cleaning, sterilizing, storing, and distributing medical instruments, supplies, and equipment in accordance with Title 22 requirements and The Joint Commission standards.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Decontaminate, clean, and sterilize medical instruments, supplies, and equipment using approved disinfectants, detergent soap, and ultrasonic cleaning.
  • Assemble, inspect, test, wrap, and date medical instruments, supplies, and equipment using illustrated manuals or lists aseptically.
  • Notify supervisors of needed repairs and maintain accurate records.
  • Fulfill written, KPDS, and telephone requisitions for processed medical supplies and equipment, and issue them according to priority of need.
  • Deliver equipment and supplies as needed and update equipment inventory by logging in and out equipment.
  • Clean and disinfect Biomedical and floor equipment, and obtain required patient information when issuing equipment.
  • Exchange, build, and assemble Crash Carts for Hospital Units and Medical Group Clinics.
  • Perform biological testing on Sterrads, make test ampules, observe sterile technique, and maintain a sterile field.
  • Pick up contaminated supplies and equipment according to aseptic standards and return them to Sterile Processing.
  • Establish and maintain courteous, cooperative relations with the public, patients, and other personnel.
  • Examine sterilization dates on medical instruments, supplies, and equipment and replace items no longer sterile.
  • Pull OR schedules, review, analyze, and determine preference sheets to be utilized for cases.
  • Promote, ensure, and improve customer service to internal and external customers by demonstrating skills consistent with the organization's philosophy of providing extraordinary customer relations and quality service.
Requirements:
  • Knowledge of surgical instrumentation, basic microbiology, basic anatomy, and physiology.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Ability to lift 60 pounds and move in excess of 200 pounds.
  • Ability to tolerate prolonged standing.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Central Service Certification and Medical Terminology preferred.
