Oversee and direct the Public Works Field Services Division, tasked with the management and upkeep of transportation and stormwater systems within Sarasota County. This role encompasses the supervision of work planning and scheduling, maintenance of roads, bridges, signage, drainage systems, and aquatic vegetation, among other responsibilities. The position includes 4 direct reports and leads a dedicated team of over 130 members committed to enhancing community safety and aesthetics.

Provide high-level leadership, management, and oversight of the Field Services Division within the Public Works Department, ensuring the operation, maintenance, repair, and construction of public transportation and stormwater infrastructure within unincorporated Sarasota County and the City of Sarasota.

  • Participate in regular Director's Leadership meetings.
  • Keep the Director and Managers apprised of potential operational challenges.
  • Coordinate issue resolution and promote common objectives with Managers across Public Works and, as necessary, with other Directors and County Administrators.
  • Lead and guide the Division; develop and manage annual budgets, procure essential resources, engage with labor unions, prioritize customer service, and foster a positive workplace culture.
  • Build and maintain community partnerships through exceptional customer service.
  • Ensure consistent procurement and contract management practices.
  • Establish and uphold standardized business practices for uniform performance across the Department.
  • Support initiatives for APWA Accreditation.
  • Champion the County's mission, vision, and values for community benefit.
  • Encourage trustworthy relationships by empowering employees and promoting excellence, efficiency, innovation, and teamwork.
  • Engage with County Administration and Commissioners regarding matters under consideration by the Board of County Commissioners, and present at public meetings as necessary.
  • Develop and implement an effective organizational structure for the Division.
  • Exhibit a positive demeanor as a representative of Sarasota County Government.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Foster staff professional development, workplace diversity, and team cohesion.

Note on Substance Screening: This position requires successful completion of a pre-employment substance screening. Failure to pass will result in disqualification from employment for five (5) years.

Candidate Profile

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Public Administration, Business Management, or a related field AND eight (8) or more years of relevant experience.
  • - OR - Master's Degree in one of the aforementioned fields AND six (6) or more years of relevant experience.
  • Four (4) or more years of supervisory or management experience.
  • A valid Florida Driver's License is required at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced professional certification is highly desirable.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience in transportation and stormwater operations, maintenance, and related equipment.
  • Experience managing operational budgets.
  • Effective public speaking and communication abilities.
  • Proven ability to manage personnel and projects with a focus on customer service, innovation, and productivity.
  • Experience managing labor union employees.
Additional Information

Compensation: Starting pay range of $110,000 to $121,000, based on experience.
