Technical Program Manager & Quality Engineer
Location: Cupertino, California, United States
Department: Operations and Supply Chain
At Apple, we believe that new ideas can transform into remarkable products, services, and customer experiences rapidly. Your passion and commitment can lead to extraordinary achievements. Our team at Apple is not just about creating products; we are about crafting the kind of innovation that has redefined entire industries. The diversity of our workforce and their ideas fuels the creativity that permeates everything we do, from groundbreaking technology to leading environmental initiatives. Join us in our mission to enhance the world.
Role Overview:
In this prominent position, you will be responsible for both Technical Program Management (TPM) and Quality Engineering (MQE) for the next generation of Apple products. This entails overseeing the selection, implementation, and optimization of manufacturing processes along with quality planning and execution. You will collaborate with a global network of supplier factories, ensuring that our partners meet ambitious timelines. Our emphasis is on the flawless execution of exceptional industrial designs, resulting in products that delight our customers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Process Development: Lead and propose experiments to generate timely and precise analyses that inform design, development, and supply chain decisions. Evaluate the appropriateness of fabrication technologies for specific part designs. Plan validation exercises to confirm initial feasibility and manufacturing capabilities. Analyze validation results and provide technical recommendations. Monitor development activities at supplier locations and act as the escalation point for critical process issues.
- New Product Introduction: Spearhead process development and capability assessment activities, ensuring part design documentation aligns with process capabilities. Assign tasks and collaborate with Apple suppliers to support process development and data collection. Set clear performance goals and conduct timely reviews throughout the program lifecycle. Establish validation procedures to assess tooling acceptance for development builds and mass production.
- Supplier Execution: Evaluate supplier tool designs, process flows, equipment selections, DFM, and DOE proposals. Identify deficiencies and recommend corrective actions to ensure design compliance. Collaborate with supplier engineering teams to outline process development exercises, secure necessary resources, and adhere to schedules aligned with program objectives. Assess supplier readiness for build events and production ramp-up, identifying potential execution challenges and providing risk mitigation strategies.
- Quality Planning: Utilize a solid understanding of quality control and manufacturing principles to develop a tailored Product Quality Plan (PQP) for the program and commodity. Coordinate all Quality Engineering functions for the program, acting as the project manager to lead initiatives at supplier locations. Actively engage in program planning and monitoring, taking responsibility for key deliverables at all milestones. Provide technical direction and support to other Quality Engineers involved in PQP implementation. Address measurement concerns creatively with stakeholders and direct studies to enhance measurement methods where applicable. Establish audit procedures to ensure compliance with Apple quality standards and implement FAI and Cp/Cpk reviews of mechanical components.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 7+ years of experience in supporting new product launches from a mechanical, process engineering, quality planning, quality engineering, or product development perspective.
- Experience with soft materials (non-wovens, wovens, knits, leather) and their inputs (yarns, raw materials) is strongly preferred. Familiarity with mechanically fabricated parts, adhesives, jigs, fixtures, tooling, injection molding, and plastics is also acceptable.
- Proven experience in developing process quality plans, conducting supplier quality audits, and driving corrective actions and failure analysis efforts.
- Knowledge of mechanical quality and reliability concepts, supplier management, and general manufacturing operations.
- Willingness to travel internationally to supplier sites, particularly in Asia.
- Demonstrated hands-on mechanical skills and excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
Compensation and Benefits:
At Apple, base pay is just one component of our total compensation package, which is determined within a range. The base pay range for this role is between $151,200 and $227,600, depending on skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Employees also have the opportunity to participate in discretionary employee stock programs and receive benefits including comprehensive medical and dental coverage, retirement benefits, discounts on products and services, and reimbursement for educational expenses related to career advancement.
