Position Overview:

Amherst College is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Campus Law Enforcement Officer. This full-time, year-round position offers a competitive starting wage of $24.00/hour, with an anticipated starting rate of $29.00/hour for officers certified in Massachusetts. The successful applicant will contribute to a diverse community and demonstrate a commitment to fostering an inclusive environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Law Enforcement Duties: Enforce federal, state, and local laws, as well as college regulations. Protect civil rights and provide assistance in domestic violence situations. Detect and address criminal activities, gather and preserve evidence, and process arrests in accordance with Massachusetts law.
  • Community Interaction: Engage with the campus community on a daily basis in a non-enforcement capacity. Foster relationships with students and staff, conduct safety presentations, and participate in community events.
  • Support for Residential Life: Collaborate with residential life staff to address noise complaints and disturbances. Respond to mental health emergencies in partnership with residential staff.
  • Emergency Response: Provide immediate assistance during accidents or injuries on campus, including first aid and CPR. Support emergency medical personnel as needed.
  • Fire Safety: Investigate fire alarms and ensure proper evacuation procedures are followed. Participate in emergency evacuation drills.
  • Service Provision: Open campus buildings for authorized individuals and manage alarm systems. Assist with crowd control during events and provide general information to the college community.
  • Preventive Patrol: Conduct regular patrols of campus facilities to ensure safety and security.
Qualifications:

Required
  • Ability to obtain certification as a Massachusetts Special State Police Officer.
  • Valid Massachusetts License to Carry a Firearm.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Successful completion of annual training requirements.
  • Valid Driver's License and compliance with college policies.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to working effectively with diverse populations.
Preferred
  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience in university law enforcement.
  • Knowledge of anti-bias practices.
