The Lead Pharmacy Technician will also assist in data collection and provide training for new staff, residents, and interns, while performing other essential functions typical of a Pharmacy Technician.

This role promotes a collaborative work environment, contributing to a team-oriented unit that strives for optimal departmental outcomes. It involves working closely with other healthcare professionals to resolve issues and achieve patient-specific objectives.
Additionally, the Lead Pharmacy Technician will actively support the training of new employees and pharmacy learners, including residents, interns, and students.
Service Excellence Functions
In this capacity, the Lead Pharmacy Technician will enhance the safety and efficiency of pharmacy operations, ensuring that the workflow meets departmental needs. Responsibilities include:
- Contributing to the resolution of drug-related issues
- Facilitating in-service training for pharmacy staff as directed by management
- Participating in committees and continuing education for technical staff
Quality and Safety Functions
This role involves performing advanced technician services to guarantee safe and efficient medication distribution. Key activities include:
- Management of controlled substances

- Conducting medication histories
- Advanced medication preparation
The Lead Pharmacy Technician will support workflow and report issues to the appropriate parties, ensuring accurate documentation and completion of assigned tasks. This includes reporting near misses and input errors promptly to enhance processes and identify trends.
Moreover, the Lead Pharmacy Technician will contribute to quality improvement initiatives and report data related to productivity projects aimed at optimizing patient safety.
Financial Responsibilities
This position requires efficient use of resources, avoiding waste, and recommending solutions to meet departmental goals. The Lead Pharmacy Technician must manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks independently.
Growth and Innovation Responsibilities
The Lead Pharmacy Technician will assist management in planning, developing, implementing, and monitoring new pharmacy programs and services focused on medication safety and error reduction. Identifying opportunities for process improvements in medication distribution is also a key aspect of this role.
Continuous learning and development beyond baseline competencies are encouraged to enhance skills as a Lead Pharmacy Technician.
Education and Experience Requirements
High School diploma or equivalent is required, with two years of college preferred. A minimum of two years of relevant Pharmacy Technician experience is necessary, preferably in a hospital or specialty pharmacy setting.
Licenses and Certifications
Required certifications include:
- LPHT - Licensed Pharmacy Technician - State Registration
- IV Certification - Intravenous certification (if applicable, to be obtained within 90 days)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The ideal candidate will demonstrate the necessary skills and competencies to perform assigned duties safely. Proficiency in English is essential for effective communication with patients and healthcare team members.
Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to adapt to changing priorities, and proficiency in pharmacy-related software and equipment are also critical for success in this role.
Work Environment
Uniform requirements include scrubs, and the position does not require on-call duties or travel outside the local area.
