About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Custodian to join our team at Portland Public Schools. As a Custodian, you will play a vital role in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of our schools, ensuring a healthy and productive learning environment for our students and staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the Custodial Team to ensure the building is clean and well-maintained, including dusting, sweeping, mopping, waxing floors, washing windows, and cleaning sumps.
  • Prioritize the cleaning of different types of rooms, including restrooms, kitchens, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and other areas.
  • Perform minor maintenance tasks, such as changing lights, and assist with special projects, such as moving heavy equipment.
  • Work with school staff to set up the building for after-school activities, special events, and meetings.
  • Be available for after-hours emergency assistance to the building, if needed.
  • Collaborate with the team to implement Equity initiatives that promote the PPS mission.
Requirements
  • Ability to speak, read, and write in English.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and carry out written and oral directions, ask questions, and seek assistance when needed.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work successfully with diverse employees and perform consistently with a customer service model.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to learn and operate boilers, heating and ventilation systems, and simple maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to lift 0-50 lbs and perform physical tasks for eight hours per day.
