POSITION SUMMARY:

Penn State's Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program, located within the Department of Entomology, is seeking a bilingual (English/Spanish) Outreach Specialist. This role focuses on urban communities in Philadelphia and surrounding areas to implement IPM initiatives and foster relationships with Pennsylvania IPM partners. The ideal candidate will collaborate with a team to promote effective pest control strategies (including for bed bugs, cockroaches, mice, and rats) in various urban settings such as single-family homes, schools, and commercial establishments. The position places significant emphasis on engaging with the Latinx community, which represents a substantial portion of Philadelphia's population. Fluency in Spanish (speaking, reading, and writing) is essential. The candidate must be a trusted individual who understands the unique experiences, socio-economic challenges, and cultural contexts of the communities served.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

No direct reports; may assist in guiding and supporting interns.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Collaborate with a team to support community-driven initiatives addressing urban pest issues.
  • Organize and facilitate events that engage local residents and stakeholders.
  • Recruit and empower local volunteers to take active leadership roles within their communities.
  • Design and implement innovative outreach and engagement activities across Philadelphia and nearby regions.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with residents, community leaders, local organizations, and authorities.
  • Support both in-person and online outreach efforts.
  • Assist in the delivery and evaluation of community-based qualitative research.
  • Participate in meetings and collaborate with established partnerships; travel may be required.
  • Adapt to various work environments, including office settings and community locations, with potential evening and weekend hours.
  • Maintain accurate case notes and documentation, ensuring compliance with reporting requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with community partners and Penn State Extension staff.
  • Perform additional duties or special projects as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Fluency in Spanish is required.
  • Strong interpersonal and community engagement abilities.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
This position requires the operation of a motor vehicle as part of job duties. A valid US driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be necessary, along with standard background checks.
