The Clinical Laboratory Specialist plays a crucial role in the laboratory environment, engaging with patients and healthcare professionals. This position supports various laboratory workflows, including preanalytical, analytical, and post-analytical processes.

Key Responsibilities:
1) Patient registration, 2) Phlebotomy procedures, 3) Sample processing, aliquoting, and preparation for transport/testing, and 4) Conducting CLIA waived, moderate, and high complexity testing across clinical laboratory areas such as hematology, chemistry, coagulation, urinalysis, microbiology, and blood bank.

Detailed Responsibilities:
Analytic Workflows:


Assist in clinical testing through duties such as slide preparation, microbiology setup, reagent preparation, instrument loading, and quality control.


Perform CLIA waived, moderate, and high complexity testing for medical and legal chain of custody samples in accordance with established protocols, adhering to good laboratory practices.

Maintain efficiency with workflow and workload.

Conduct routine instrument function verification, quality control, and maintenance documentation.

Troubleshoot and resolve non-routine instrument issues, contacting service support as necessary.

Assist with document control activities, including writing and reviewing technical and non-technical procedures.

Pre-Analytic Workflows:

Greet patients with professionalism, adhering to best practice guidelines for patient experience.

Identify patients and samples using two identifiers, ensuring proper labeling in the patient's presence.


Independently perform venous and capillary blood collections for patients of all ages, adhering to safety protocols and timelines.

Process, aliquot, and prepare samples for transport/testing.

Utilize supplies efficiently, recognizing when to reorder and assisting with restocking.

Develop a comprehensive understanding of lab tests to effectively address patient inquiries.

Post-Analytic Workflows:

Follow established reporting protocols, including critical value reporting.

Monitor test results, identifying clerical and analytical errors, as well as issues related to sample integrity.

Manage pending logs and work queues, resolving registration errors and pending tests.

Prepare and log samples for proper storage and retention.


As qualified, perform supervisory functions overseeing workflows and testing personnel in the absence of management.


Team Commitment:

Assist in training new employees and students, providing support in their learning process.

Participate in department meetings, huddles, and required training sessions.

Regularly check communications for important updates relevant to your role.

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Science, or a related field.

Clinical experience or demonstrated efficiency in a college or post-graduate hospital setting.

Must hold MT or MLS certification or be eligible, with certification through a national certifying body (ASCP or equivalent) required upon hire or within six months of eligibility.

Active certification must be maintained throughout employment.

Fluency in English, both written and spoken.

Demonstrated multicultural sensitivity.

Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Customer and patient-focused approach.

Critical thinking skills with the ability to make independent decisions.

Familiarity with computer programs for patient identification, registration, order, and sample tracking.

Comprehensive knowledge of reporting systems for test results.


Commitment to patient and workplace safety by preventing errors and reporting concerns promptly.

Knowledge of computer systems used on analyzers, Sunquest, and EPIC.

Familiarity with standard laboratory equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
