The Clinical Laboratory Scientist (MT/MLS) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is responsible for delivering precise and timely clinical diagnostic information to healthcare professionals, ensuring superior patient care and customer service.


Responsibilities:
Safety

  • Exhibits an understanding that patient and workplace safety is paramount by preventing errors, accidents, and infections, and promptly reporting any potential or actual concerns. Collects, labels, and transports specimens according to established standards. Engages in and adheres to LEAN work and productivity standards.
Specimen Collection

Collects, prioritizes, executes, assesses, and reports routine and specialized procedures within set timeframes.

Maintenance

Oversees equipment, inventory, and work environment, ensuring proper documentation.

Critical Thinking


Conducts, evaluates, and documents advanced troubleshooting and problem-solving tasks; collaborates with clients and nursing staff, interpreting data for relevant health professionals.

Training

Instructs, mentors, and assesses students and new team members.

Quality

Records and maintains quality control (QC), proficiency testing, quality assurance, and other documentation to comply with regulatory standards.

Emergency Communication


This role may involve specific responsibilities during emergency situations to assist in disaster response and recovery as part of the UnityPoint Health – Des Moines Hospital Emergency Incident Command System (HEICS). Critical situations may necessitate the individual to perform multiple tasks until further assistance is available.

Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the designated calendar year.

Is knowledgeable of hospital and departmental compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g., Medicare and Medicaid) concerning fraud, waste, and abuse.
Addresses any compliance-related questions or concerns promptly with hospital administrative staff.
Takes appropriate action on compliance concerns reported by department personnel.

Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements

Identify essential qualifications necessary to perform the core functions of this position.

Preferred or Specialized

Not mandatory for performing the essential functions of the role.

Education:


A Bachelor's Degree in Science is required, enabling certification under one of the Medical Technologist (MT)/Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) Certifying Agencies' examination routes.

Must comply with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) requirements for conducting highly complex testing. Additionally, any applicable personnel standards from regulatory agencies must be met.


Certifying Agencies include, but are not limited to, the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC), American Medical Technologist (AMT) Certification, and American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB) Board of Registry (ABOR).

As long as these criteria are satisfied, any examination may be undertaken.

Experience:


Experience in clinical laboratory disciplines sufficient to qualify for certification under one of the Medical Technologist (MT)/Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) Certifying Agencies' examination routes is required.


License(s)/Certification(s):
Technologist/Scientist (MT/MLS) Certification must be obtained within one (1) year of employment.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Must possess the ability to read, write, and communicate fluently in English.

Equipment utilized in this position includes analytical laboratory instruments, laboratory processing devices, and hospital and laboratory information systems.
