Department Overview and Role of Interventional Radiology Specialist 2:

The Invasive Cardiovascular Labs consist of 14 labs (including Cardiac Catheterization Labs, Interventional Radiology Labs, and Electrophysiology Labs) and a Comprehensive Stroke Center equipped with two bi-plane Neurovascular rooms. As an Interventional Radiology Specialist 2 in the IR Lab at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus, you will be involved in cases related to:

Neuro and Vascular Cases Include:
  • Embolization of the Middle Meningeal Artery
  • Complex Neuro Aneurysm Treatments (Flow Diverter cases, coilings, and device-assisted coilings)
  • Management of Stroke
  • Staged AVM Treatments
Vascular Cases Include:
  • Complex Peripheral Interventions (Atherectomy and Thrombectomy)
  • Advanced Biliary Interventions (BATO/BRTO and TIPS)
  • Interventional Oncology (Y90/TACE using the Philips Emboguide system, Port Placement, and Pain Management techniques such as Cryo and Microwave)
  • Vascular Embolization Cases (Trauma and GI, Subclavian post-TEVAR, Sclerotherapy, Pelvic Congestion, and AAA Endoleak Repair)
  • Complex Pulmonary Interventions (CTEPH management with Balloon Angioplasty and PE Thrombectomy)

Key Responsibilities
  • Utilizes Inova Health System Inventory Management systems effectively.
  • Assists nursing staff in clearly explaining procedures to patients and their families to alleviate anxiety.
  • Troubleshoots equipment efficiently and coordinates service calls to Biomedical when necessary.
  • Anticipates procedure flow and collaborates with team members to ensure the highest quality of care.
  • Maintains a safe environment by promptly identifying hazards and following unit protocols for corrective actions.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in imaging modalities used in Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology, including digital imaging, laser printing, and cut film.
  • Exhibits advanced knowledge of sterile techniques while assisting interventional radiologists during procedures.
  • Demonstrates proper techniques for the injection of IV contrast or other test-enhancing solutions, adhering to the guidelines set by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
  • May undertake additional responsibilities as assigned.
Additional Qualifications

Certification - Basic Life Support (BLS) and American Registered Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) registry in Vascular Interventional (VI), Cardiovascular (CV), or Cardiovascular Interventional (CI) required.

Licensure - A license as a Radiologic Technologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia is necessary only if the position is located in a free-standing center not affiliated with an Inova Health System Hospital.

Experience - A minimum of one year of experience as a Cardiovascular Interventional Radiology Technologist is required.

Education - Vocational/Technical training in Radiologic Technology; graduation from an accredited Radiography program; an Associate degree or higher is preferred.
