Position Title: Residential Counselor
Department: Adult Disabilities Services
Reports To: Residential Coordinator
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Position Summary: Under the general guidance of the Residential Coordinator, the Residential Counselor is responsible for assisting participants in cluster homes, aiming to enhance their potential for personal development and integration into the community, in alignment with each participant's support plan. The role involves ensuring a high standard of care for participants both within cluster homes and in collaboration with community partners.
Supervisory, Training, and Administrative Duties
- Engage actively in regular supervision and collaborate with the Residential Coordinator to maintain a secure living environment for all participants. Attend staff meetings, case evaluations, Individual Support Plans (ISPs), and mandatory training sessions.
- Maintain all necessary certifications, including obtaining and keeping current Medication Administration Program Certification (MAP). Adhere to MAB and DDS policies along with relevant state regulations.
- Complete assignments as directed by the Residential Coordinator, Case Manager, Assistant Director, MAP Consultant, and other supervisory personnel.
Quality Assurance Responsibilities
- Ensure a safe and hygienic environment for all participants. Assist and encourage participants in maintaining their living space.
- Support data collection, progress documentation, and assessments related to the implementation of ISPs.
- Follow all program policies regarding documentation, communication, reporting, and confidentiality. Maintain accurate records of participant and program finances.
- Administer medications, monitor vital signs, and provide treatments to participants according to physician directives and MAP policies.
Person-Centered Support and Planning
- Advocate for participants effectively, ensuring their choices, interests, and needs are prioritized and executed in accordance with their Individual Support Plan (ISP), including person-centered planning.
- Deliver direct assistance and instruction to participants in their daily living activities, which may include bathing, cooking, cleaning, and shopping, providing physical support as necessary.
- Monitor and report on participants' physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Serve as a positive role model in interpersonal relations, social behavior, and appropriate attire for various weather conditions, all while adhering to MAB policies.
- Handle challenging situations, facilitate problem-solving, and offer positive behavioral support. Exercise sound judgment in scenarios with limited guidelines.
Community Engagement
- Assist participants in forming and sustaining meaningful relationships with friends and family.
- Create opportunities for participants to engage as active members of the community. Identify and support suitable and safe community activities that align with participants' interests.
- Facilitate and provide transportation for participants to community activities, appointments, work, errands, and medical visits.
- Accompany participants to their community engagements, appointments, work, errands, and medical visits.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED); or a combination of education and experience. A bachelor's degree and/or relevant experience is preferred.
- Effective communication skills with participants, their families, colleagues, and community professionals. Ability to read and comprehend ISPs, records, policies, and manuals. Proficient in writing accurate and timely progress reports and other documentation.
- Valid driver's license and capability to operate program vehicles and wheelchair vans for participant transportation. Must be able to drive for extended periods and on highways.
- Physical ability to walk, stand, and drive frequently. Must maintain a high energy level in a dynamic environment and be able to lift and carry lightweight to moderately heavy objects. Must assist in lifting and transferring participants and implement safety restraint procedures as needed.
- Comfortable with technology and capable of learning new reporting software.
- MAB will support employees in obtaining required MAP Certification, CPR, and First Aid certifications if not already possessed upon hiring.
