Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated professional to serve as the Director of Student Athlete Career Development. This individual will play a critical role in supporting the career development and professional growth of student athletes at Virginia Tech.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist student athletes and alumni with all aspects of their professional lives, including career research, goal setting, job searching, resume and cover letter writing, networking, interviewing, professional etiquette, online professional branding, graduate school, personal statements, job shadowing, on-campus employment, and internships.
  • Foster professional development skills through programming and individual appointments with student athletes.
  • Coordinate student athlete development programs in accordance with guidelines outlined in the NCAA Student Athlete Affairs program.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in student affairs, higher education administration, athletic administration, counseling, or a related area with relative work experience as a coordinator, advisor, mentor, and/or counselor within a NCAA member institution's athletics department or work experience in a career-related office at a college or university.
  • Knowledge of best practices related to undergraduate student career advising.
  • Working knowledge of the current landscape of collegiate athletics and the demands of student athletes.
  • Ability to interact diplomatically with individuals of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Experience in presentation of workshops or public speaking.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to diversity.
  • Ability to work independently as a leader and as part of a team.
  • Ability to effectively interact with faculty, staff, students, parents, and administrators.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in career development and advising.
  • Knowledge of NCAA regulations and guidelines.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
