Position Overview

The HVAC Mechanic plays a crucial role within the Facilities Operations team. With a wealth of journey-level expertise and minimal supervision, the HVAC Mechanic is tasked with safely executing a comprehensive range of advanced HVAC responsibilities. This includes, but is not limited to, the inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of various HVAC systems across the campus. Adherence to safety protocols and established work procedures is mandatory at all times.

Key Responsibilities
  • Efficiently performs a broad spectrum of advanced installation, inspection, and repair tasks for commercial and institutional HVAC systems.
  • Diagnoses HVAC system issues, assesses potential solutions, and implements necessary repairs. In critical situations, takes prompt action to mitigate problems and restore systems to optimal functionality.
  • Ensures the proper handling and maintenance of vehicles, tools, and equipment essential for task completion.
  • Interprets and comprehends construction and equipment-related documentation, including drawings and manuals.
  • Collaborates with other trades personnel on complex projects.
  • Operates independently based on written and electronic work orders from a CMMS System, taking responsibility for assigned tasks. Maintains records of maintenance activities within an automated work order system.
  • Undertakes additional duties as required, including overtime, after-hours work, special events, and emergency call-ins.
  • Adheres to the department's customer service standards.
  • Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Conducts daily tasks safely and follows established safety practices.
  • Responds to after-hours and emergency campus call-ins as necessary.
  • Performs other assigned duties.
Qualifications

  • A minimum of three years of experience as a journey-level HVAC mechanic (beyond apprenticeship or equivalent training).
  • High School diploma or GED, along with relevant education in HVAC installation, troubleshooting, and repair.
  • Solid understanding of steam and chilled water systems, with the capability to work on both high- and low-pressure steam systems.
  • Strong grasp of safe work practices.
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Commitment to upholding the department's customer service standards.
  • Experience with various piping systems, including black and copper.
  • Ability to interpret drawings and service manuals for all serviced equipment.
  • Good knowledge of air handling systems, hot water, and chilled water pumps.
  • Computer literacy and the ability to become proficient with applicable campus software systems.
  • Availability for after-hours and emergency callback work.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively engage with customers and colleagues at all organizational levels.
  • Willingness to learn computer basics and utilize the department's CMMS Software System.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands outlined below.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certifications in one or more of the following areas:
  • Welding and Oxy-Acetylene torch operation
  • EPA Universal Refrigerant License
  • HVAC Certifications (ASHRAE or similar)

  • Stand or walk for up to 2 hours at a time, up to 8 hours per day.
  • Sit for less than 2 hours during an 8-hour day.
  • Occasionally operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment (e.g., forklift, high reach, cherry picker) (less than 33% of the workday).
  • Lift or carry up to 35 pounds frequently (34 – 66% of the workday) and 100 pounds occasionally (less than 33% of the workday).
  • Lift up to 100 pounds to waist height and up to 35 pounds in various motions from floor to overhead.
  • Frequently use hands for simple grasping, fine manipulation, pushing, or pulling (34 – 66% of the workday).
  • Occasionally climb stairs or ladders, dig, use jackhammers or chipping tools, lie down, push or pull with forces up to 100 pounds (less than 33% of the workday).
  • Frequently bend, squat, kneel, knee stand, lift overhead, reach overhead, push or pull with forces up to 35 pounds (34 – 66% of the workday).
  • Work outdoors in various temperatures and environmental conditions.
  • Possess the ability to work at heights, demonstrate full range of body motions and physical agility, and maintain balance.
