Position Overview
The HVAC Technician plays a crucial role within the Facilities Operations team. With advanced skills and experience, the technician is entrusted with executing a comprehensive range of HVAC tasks with minimal supervision. This includes the inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of various HVAC systems on campus, all while adhering to safety protocols and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducts a diverse array of installation, inspection, and repair tasks for commercial and institutional HVAC systems safely and effectively.
  • Diagnoses HVAC system issues, assesses potential solutions, and implements necessary repairs. In urgent situations, promptly addresses problems to restore functionality.
  • Maintains proper care and safety in the use of vehicles, tools, and equipment essential for task completion.
  • Interprets construction and equipment-related documents, including drawings and manuals.
  • Collaborates with other trades personnel on complex projects.
  • Works independently from written and electronic work orders and is accountable for assigned tasks. Maintains records of maintenance activities in an automated work order system.
  • Performs additional duties as required, including overtime and emergency call-ins.
  • Adheres to the department's customer service standards.
  • Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Follows safe work practices and performs daily tasks with safety in mind.
  • Responds to after-hours and emergency campus call-ins as necessary.

Qualifications
To excel in this role, candidates must demonstrate the ability to fulfill essential duties satisfactorily. The following qualifications are required:

  • A minimum of three years of experience as a journey-level HVAC technician.
  • High School diploma or GED, along with relevant education in HVAC installation, troubleshooting, and repair.
  • Strong knowledge of steam and chilled water systems, with the ability to work on both high- and low-pressure steam systems.
  • Understanding of safe work practices.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Experience with various piping systems, including black and copper.
  • Capability to interpret drawings and service manuals for all serviced equipment.
  • Familiarity with air handling systems, hot water, and chilled water pumps.
  • Computer literacy and proficiency in using applicable software systems.
  • Availability for after-hours and emergency callback work.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively interact with customers and colleagues.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certifications in disciplines such as:
  • Welding and Oxy-Acetylene torch use
  • EPA Universal Refrigerant License
  • HVAC Certifications (e.g., ASHRAE)

Physical Demands
The physical requirements for this position include:

  • Standing or walking for up to 2 hours at a time, and up to 8 hours daily.
  • Sitting for less than 2 hours during an 8-hour workday.
  • Occasional operation of motor vehicles or heavy equipment.
  • Lifting or carrying up to 35 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying temperatures and conditions.
  • Capability to work at heights and maintain physical agility.
