Position Overview
The role is responsible for executing advanced indirect and selected direct patient care responsibilities in support of the nursing process competently under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), as specified in the Skills Inventory. Additionally, the position involves performing clerical tasks, conducting phlebotomy duties, and serving as a mentor and resource for staff. The role also entails coordinating and overseeing various non-clinical and ancillary services within the assigned patient care unit to enhance the efficiency and quality of unit operations.Key Responsibilities
Essential Qualifications
Education: Associate's degree in Business or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses/Certifications:
- BLS Certification required and one (1) or more of the following preferred:
- Licensed Paramedic or
- Certified Nursing Assistant by the Texas Department of Health; or
- Nursing Student with two (2) years of clinical studies or
- Graduate of an accredited foreign nursing program with nursing credentials/licensure in the home country or
- Medical Assistant; or
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) from an accredited program.
- Minimum of two (2) years in a hospital or long-term care facility, or related experience.
- Minimum of two (2) years experience in administrative functions, including extensive customer service interaction, financial management, and supplies/equipment oversight.
- Strong organizational skills; ability to communicate clearly in person and over the phone; ability to assimilate information both verbally and in writing for correspondence; proficient command of the English language; working knowledge of medical terminology; strong customer service management abilities.
- Ability to comprehend written instructions and perform basic mathematical calculations; demonstrates skills for assigned specialty area/function or procedures, including a working knowledge of basic medical terminology and computer software skills.
- Proven ability to perform duties with increased responsibilities.
- Ability to undertake tasks requiring prolonged standing, walking, stooping, bending, and lifting.
- Coordinates and oversees various non-clinical and ancillary services of assigned patient care units, including but not limited to environmental services, maintenance, central supplies, food/nutrition, and related unit support functions.
- Monitors supply inventory, analyzes usage patterns, and ensures optimal par levels; requisitions supplies and equipment as well as maintenance repair services; ensures that maintenance and repair needs are addressed; tracks and documents lost or damaged equipment and supplies.
- Welcomes physicians and visitors to the unit to foster a service-oriented environment; identifies, acknowledges, and responds to the needs of patients, physicians, and staff; manages the patient call light process, ensuring that patient needs are met promptly.
- Ensures smooth patient flow by admitting, transferring, and discharging patients in the computer system within a timely manner and notifying appropriate personnel of patient status.
- Schedules patient testing, delivers specimens to the lab; receives urgent lab results and updates the patient record; assists in ordering and serving patient meals, transporting patients, and performing indirect patient care duties competently according to the needs of the patient population served.
- Maintains complete and accurate patient records; enters physician orders without error; maintains physician of record on computer and patient chart to ensure appropriate routing of patient information.
- Identifies and facilitates resolution of unit operational challenges independently, collaborating with management to resolve complex issues; collects and analyzes data related to unit operational activities as directed by management.
- Performs advanced indirect and direct patient care duties competently as directed by a physician, registered nurse, or licensed vocational nurse within the scope of hospital-approved skills inventory according to the needs of the patient population served.
- Enters physician orders via computer and coordinates schedules for diagnostic testing; assists patients with educational materials; performs assigned treatments as directed; prepares patients for meals and assists with feeding; maintains patient rooms in an orderly manner.
- Reports any changes in a patient's condition to the supervising nurse.
- Ensures safe care for patients, staff, and visitors; adheres to all policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications, including time management, supply management, productivity, and quality of service.
- Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals contributing to the organization's success; serves as a mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
- Demonstrates commitment to caring for every member of our community by creating compassionate and personalized experiences. Models service standards by providing safe, caring, personalized, and efficient experiences to patients and colleagues.
