Position Overview: Chief Executive Officer

Location: Memphis, TN

The Memphis Botanic Garden, a sprawling 96-acre sanctuary nestled in the heart of Memphis, is dedicated to enriching lives by fostering connections between individuals and nature while promoting environmental awareness and appreciation. Open 363 days a year, the Garden welcomes approximately 260,000 visitors annually, offering access to over 30 display gardens and plant collections that provide year-round opportunities for recreation, environmental education, entertainment, and tranquility.

With an operating budget of $4 million and a dedicated team of 60 staff members, the Garden is owned by the City of Memphis and is managed through a sustainable operating contract by the Memphis Botanic Garden Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization governed by a 20-member Board of Directors and an 18-member Advisory Board.

The Memphis Botanic Garden is on the cusp of significant growth, and the next Chief Executive Officer will have the unique opportunity to guide the organization through the final phase of its strategic plan, building on the successes achieved in recent years.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide overall leadership and management of the Garden.
  • Set strategic priorities to sustain and enhance the Garden's recent growth.
  • Engage regularly with the Board of Directors and manage staff effectively.
  • Serve as the primary representative of the Garden to donors, partners, and the public.
  • Oversee budgeting, strategic planning, maintenance of gardens and facilities, collections, educational programming, membership development, marketing, public relations, sponsorships, grants, and fundraising efforts.

Qualifications:

While specific experience with public gardens is preferred, it is not mandatory. Candidates must demonstrate a strong affinity and passion for the mission of public gardens. Senior-level leadership experience in a destination venue that aims to provide an exceptional visitor experience is highly desirable.

A robust connection to the Memphis community is preferred, along with the ability to cultivate and maintain personal and professional relationships within the community.

A Master's degree or a minimum of 10 years of experience in the nonprofit cultural sector, including government, business management, or administrative roles, is required.

Compensation: The salary range for this position is between $160,000 and $185,000, which includes a board-approved bonus and will be commensurate with experience. Benefits encompass paid time off, healthcare/dental/vision insurance, and an employer contribution to a 401k plan. Additional perks include access to a golf cart for use on the grounds and exclusive seating for concerts.
