Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Animal Control Officer to join our team at Ingham County, MI. As an Animal Control Officer, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of animals and the community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Respond to citizen requests for service, documenting incidents as necessary.
  • Conduct initial and follow-up investigations on crimes related to animals.
  • Prepare and execute search warrants on criminal investigations.
  • Gather and document evidence, including photographs and video recordings.
  • Capture and impound animals related to public safety threats and law and ordinance violations.
  • Issue summons and prepare warrant requests for violations of Michigan law and County ordinance.
  • Sell dog licenses on behalf of the Ingham County Treasurer's Office and collect fees.
  • Assist local and neighboring agencies with animal-related issues.
  • Transport animals to other animal welfare organizations as needed.
  • Perform euthanasia of animals as necessary.
Requirements
  • Associate's degree or two years of college equivalent in criminal justice, law enforcement, or corrections.
  • Prior public safety experience preferred.
  • Ability to pass a background check.
  • Certification or ability to be certified as an Animal Control Officer through the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
  • Valid Michigan driver's license.
Working Conditions
  • Works shift hours based on seniority, including days, evenings, weekends, and on-call schedules.
  • Exposure to unsanitary conditions, odors, fumes, and loud noises.
  • Exposure to animals that have the potential to bite and scratch.
  • Exposure to livestock that could cause injury during handling.
  • Exposure to deceased animals and persons.
