Job Title: Disease Control Nurse

At Ingham County Human Resources, we are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Disease Control Nurse to join our team.

Job Summary:

The Disease Control Nurse will investigate and monitor reports of communicable diseases, implement public health actions, and provide health care services, education, and interventions to clients in compliance with public health laws.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Investigate, evaluate, and assess occurrences of communicable diseases, verifying the occurrence and developing an action plan in compliance with local, state, and federal directives.
  • Provide comprehensive nursing services, including assessment, teaching, counseling, and prevention services to individuals, families, and groups.
  • Serve as a consultant to assist staff in resolving problems and suggesting alternative treatment approaches.
  • Actively participate in pandemic response, including assessment, investigation, prevention, surveillance, education, counseling, consulting, enforcement, re-assessment, and implementation of an action plan.
  • Implement prevention control measures to protect the public health and develop, implement, and maintain Health Department employee health requirements.
  • Monitor and provide case management services to clients with tuberculosis infection in both the private and public health systems.
  • Design unique plans for clients with complex circumstances that uniquely addresses all aspects of the client's care.
  • Arrange medical appointments, supervise treatment regimens, and monitor ongoing medical testing to ensure compliance to treatment.
  • Supervise and manage Latent Tuberculosis Infection (LTBI) Clinic, monitoring and providing case management services, arranging medical appointments, supervising treatment regimens, and monitoring ongoing medical testing.
  • Conduct field and office investigations to locate infected individuals, including phone calls, letter writing, and office visits, and create appropriate records of investigation.
  • Triage calls or visits from health care providers and community residents regarding communicable diseases or unusual events, assessing and evaluating information from telephone callers and responding following established protocols.
  • Conduct interviews in the office, including assessment for disease, exposure risks, current health status, education, and an appropriate follow-up plan.
  • Work with diverse cultures, including non-English speaking clients, to overcome barriers to obtaining health care.
  • Represent the agency on community boards and task forces concerned with communicable disease control, providing information about services and participating in the assessment of community needs to establish or revise public health programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Research, develop, and present mandatory internal training programs required by OSHA and continuing education unit classes (CEU) to meet professional licensing requirements.
