Unit Overview

The Medical Oncology unit is a specialized inpatient facility with a capacity of 30 beds, expandable to 36. We focus on providing care for patients with hematological and oncological conditions, alongside the ability to accommodate 24 cardiac telemetry patients. Our dedicated full-time RNs are certified in chemotherapy, and we actively support part-time and PRN RNs in achieving this certification. Engaging with oncology patients offers extensive learning experiences, including chemotherapy administration, radiation therapy insights, end-of-life care, and involvement in unique bedside procedures. Our comprehensive care spans from initial diagnosis through treatment or palliative care, emphasizing teamwork to deliver not only nursing care but also educational and emotional support to patients and their families. This role provides the opportunity to forge meaningful and lasting connections with patients and their families.

Our health system encompasses three hospitals, an outpatient surgical center, a regional cancer center, rehabilitation facilities, two long-term care residences, home care, hospice services, and 34 affiliated physician practice locations. We deliver both inpatient and outpatient medical services across Southwest Michigan.

Role Responsibilities

The RN, adhering to the ANA scope of practice, employs the nursing process framework to deliver professional nursing care. This includes integrating patient-family centered care principles to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and facilitate discharge. The RN is responsible for providing quality patient care under the guidance of the Nurse Leader, in accordance with Corewell Health policies and procedures, while recognizing the influence of nursing care and patient/family collaboration on patient outcomes. The RN collaborates with patients and families to incorporate their input and goals into the care plan and develops educational strategies for patient/family learning, documenting this appropriately in the health record.

Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree in Nursing required.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required within five years.
  • Graduates from non-accredited nursing schools must have at least one year of acute care experience or two years in a licensed healthcare role and must have successfully passed the NCLEX licensure examination.
  • Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) license required.
  • AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 90 days.
  • Chemotherapy Biotherapy certification from ONCC or ONS required for full-time employees with two years of experience.

Work Environment

This position is full-time with variable shifts. The scheduled hours are 40 per week.
