Job Description

Job Title: Assistant State Veterinarian

Job Summary: The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) is seeking a dedicated individual to fill the role of Assistant State Veterinarian. This position will play a crucial role in planning, directing, and managing production animal programs within the Division of Animal Health.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Program Management: Coordinate, supervise, and manage production animal programs within the Division of Animal Health, focusing on cooperative disease eradication initiatives targeting various diseases, ensuring compliance with federal regulations and requirements.
  • Field Supervision: Provide field supervision for all district veterinarians, overseeing their activities and ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  • Brucellosis and Tuberculosis Management: Direct the brucellosis and tuberculosis funds and vaccination program in Iowa, including supervision of associated staff.
  • Animal Disease Traceability: Manage and supervise the Iowa Premise Identification Program and Animal Disease Traceability Program, ensuring compliance and efficient operation.
  • Importation Regulations: Oversee importation regulations and procedures, including the issuance of entry permits and compliance with USDA requirements.
  • Foreign Animal Disease Investigations: Assist in managing foreign animal disease investigations and act as a trained official Foreign Animal Disease Diagnostician.
  • Complaint Disposition: Coordinate and oversee the disposition of complaints against livestock facilities, ensuring compliance with animal health regulations and assisting law enforcement in investigations.
  • State Fair Participation: Undertake miscellaneous duties including State Fair participation, public speaking engagements, staff training, contested case hearings participation, and leading field staff meetings.
  • Johnes Program Administration: Act as a statewide administrative coordinator for the Johnes Program, overseeing district veterinarian activities and grant implementation.

Requirements:

  • Leadership and Organizational Skills: Strong leadership and organizational skills are required to manage production animal programs and supervise district veterinarians.
  • Communication and Interpersonal Abilities: Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities are necessary to work effectively with district veterinarians, staff, and stakeholders.
  • Veterinary Experience: Experience in veterinary practice and/or public health is required to manage animal health programs and investigate disease outbreaks.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration: Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment is essential to achieve organizational goals.
  • Animal Welfare and Public Health Commitment: Commitment to upholding the highest standards of animal welfare and public health is required to ensure the well-being of animals and humans.
